Re: Caol Ila Live Tasting - April 19, 2008

Postby Spirit of Islay » Sat Apr 19, 2008 9:06 pm

Expression - SMWS 53.93
Age - 1980 25yo
ABV - 55.4%
Colour - Gold .
Nose - Grass , peppermint , apples , a little smoke , not exactly your average CI nose !
Palate - Very strong , peppery , oily , the Antiseptic comes through after a little while .
Finish - Long and strong peppermint .
Comment - Not exactly your average CI at first , the nose throws you but once on the palate......

I've just added water to dram 2 and it really increases the oilyness and makes it more like the 12 yo OB. The flavours are still good but not as clean/crisp, much duller. On Ganga's scale, the 12 yo OB would rate as a 6/7 with me and the 10 yo OMC as a 9/10.

There really is something brilliant about a young Caol Ila at high strength. My introduction to Caol Ila was an 8 yo (cask strength) from the SMWS at a tasting held by Jim McEwan in October 2002. Fabulous stuff it was.

Agreed Steve, nothing like a young SMWS Caol Ila. I'm hooked. As far as Ganga's scale, I'd rate the 53.108 a 8/9, with the 53.109 a 7.5/8.5 I guess. I've only opened 53.109 today, so I need to give it more time I guess, but it's a nice one!

Ganga,

Would a 55 be compareable to a 5.5 on the scale you and Mikey use?

Well I'm right into this bottle now aren't I. I just do NOT want to finish off 53.108, and this is my only other CI right now :(

Sample #4
SMWS Cask # 53.109 Caol Ila 15yr 54.5% ABV

Glass: Riedel Crystal SM Glass (part 2)
Again, not much on the nose here with this glass. I can't help but feel that I'm on the beach, and literally having waves crash down, causing a mist to come my way. Same as the last, I love the presentation on the palate with this glass. Some sweetness on the palate, and very tasty indeed. I can't quite pick out exactly what the sweet taste is though. Also that lovely oily mouth feel, I could chew on this forever. Lots of gentle peat and smokiness in the finish.

Nice note Steve, sounds like one special bottle there!
Thanks, it is, I'm having one more measure before I move on to number 3.

I'm very strong-willed, Ryan :D

You're much stronger than I am then. LOL I cannot resist the temptation. Although I'm getting a little better at it as of late. :D

Hi Ryan
53.109 - sounds like a nice dram you have there.
Dram #2 is back to its best without any water.
Enjoy

That makes sense, thanks for the explanation. :D

I have now torn myself away from dram 2 and moved on to number 3

Dram 3 - Douglas Laing Old & Rare Bottled for the Whisky Shop, Caol Ila 28 yo 54.2%, distilled Feb 79, bottled Sept 07, 261 bottles

Nose - Old friend peat smoke, but also a candy sweetness (new for me) and a definite mint character. Enticing. No nose prickle. I'm enjoying the nose!
Taste - If I must(joke), oaky like you'd expect (distinguishing, not unpleasant), peat coming through, then a salty character which really gets me salivating
Finish - Gentle, warming, spices lingering, very pleasant and soothing indeed, touch of cleansing and cooling peppermint at the death once the peat smoke has had its say
Comment - Superb. 10/10 on the Ganga scale. Whisky for the major gods.
I will sleep very well tonight having met this friend!

Hi Nick

Yes, it's a belter. I usually like CI quite young (8-12) but this one really has opened my eyes. Only available at The Whisky Shop chain. I only have a wee sample, full bottle probably about £150

Lucky me, I know and I give thanks to the whisky gods for being so kind to me!

Hi Ganga

Thanks for your reply - very interesting vatting. My previous experience of an older whisky was Glenury Royal (31 year old from Signatory) - the oak dominated and put me off older whiskies. In this CI it is there but not overbearing.

Hi Ganga

Thanks very much for the effort put into organising last night's tasting - much appreciated. I have voted Macallan for next month, chosen Friday 16, second choice would be Sat 17, but all dates should be good for me.

Cheers

Yeah, I also missed this one unfortunately - second successive time I've dipped out on the live tastings!. Oh well, I'll hopefully be around for the next one - especially if it turns out to be Lagavulin...

And for all my excitement... and purchase of 12yo and 18yo... I was called away BOTH NIGHTS... still enjoying the malts, though.

Looking forward to next month...
