Being new to the Society, I've learned my lesson. If I like it, buy another bottle, plain and simple. Oh what I'd do to get another bottle of 53.108. I'll just jump on the next young Caol Ila they offer I suppose.

Interesting that noobdy picked it out in the blind tasting Gordon. What did they think it was???

Kicked off with the 12 yo OB. I agree with Nick's postings from earlier, incredibly smooth, oily - lovely coating on the mouth, and excellent spice. This distillery is one of my favourites. Yum yum. Wife says I'm going red and I've only started !

Sample #3
SMWS Cask # 53.109 Caol Ila 15yr 54.5% ABV

Glass: Riedel Crystal SM Glass
Only thing with this glass is it gives a very weak nose IMO. Some fresh ocean air, and sea breeze, along with hints of saltwater. But the presentation on the palate is perfect. I'm getting that nice oily mouth feel, with tons of peat and smokiness!!! I can't even explain all that's going on here with this. I enjoyed this waaay too much, the glass is empty already!

Mikey and I use a 0 to 10 scale.

0 Truly undrinkable, actively offensive
1 Very flawed, will not finish
2 Not a lot there, not complex, unbalanced
3 Not complex, but shows some promise, more balanced
4 Good, drinkable, can have flaws
5 Performs well on some aspects
6 Very good
7 Highly enjoyable, increasing complexity
8 Excellent
9 Malt O' The Minor Gods
10 Malt O' The Gods

I should be back on later if there are some people hanging out.

54 ganga?... sounds like it is pretty good....

We run a different scale.

Moving on to dram 2 - OMC 10 yo 50% Bourbon Hogshead (For a Fine Cigar's Pleasure). Tasted neat.
Nose - per the label - "Earthy, oily with smoke and pepper" - I agree
Taste - per label - "round and spicy with peaty smoke" - there's also a sweetness and a coastal/salty flavour - so much so I am chewing this for ages and am very reluctant to swallow - the saline character just grows and grows
Finish - per label - salty, coastal and coffeed - I agree - I needn't have been concerned about losing the salty flavour - it keeps on going like a refill bourbon cask of Scapa (another of my favourites) with peat on top.
Comment - Fantastic. I am bowled over. This is the business. I am very pleased with this dram, knocks the socks off dram 1 (the 12 yo OB 43%). Although slightly oily, nothing near as oily as dram 1. Much cleaner.
Glass - glencairn (for all the drams)

Expression - SMWS 53.93
Age - 1980 25yo
ABV - 55.4%
Colour - Gold .
Nose - Grass , peppermint , apples , a little smoke , not exactly your average CI nose !
Palate - Very strong , peppery , oily , the Antiseptic comes through after a little while .
Finish - Long and strong peppermint .
Comment - Not exactly your average CI at first , the nose throws you but once on the palate......

I've just added water to dram 2 and it really increases the oilyness and makes it more like the 12 yo OB. The flavours are still good but not as clean/crisp, much duller. On Ganga's scale, the 12 yo OB would rate as a 6/7 with me and the 10 yo OMC as a 9/10.

There really is something brilliant about a young Caol Ila at high strength. My introduction to Caol Ila was an 8 yo (cask strength) from the SMWS at a tasting held by Jim McEwan in October 2002. Fabulous stuff it was.

Agreed Steve, nothing like a young SMWS Caol Ila. I'm hooked. As far as Ganga's scale, I'd rate the 53.108 a 8/9, with the 53.109 a 7.5/8.5 I guess. I've only opened 53.109 today, so I need to give it more time I guess, but it's a nice one!

Yes, but we use whole numbers. So a decision must be made as to 5 or 6. There is a little more freedom here to express where exactly that "5" is.

Well I'm right into this bottle now aren't I. I just do NOT want to finish off 53.108, and this is my only other CI right now :(

Sample #4
SMWS Cask # 53.109 Caol Ila 15yr 54.5% ABV

Glass: Riedel Crystal SM Glass (part 2)
Again, not much on the nose here with this glass. I can't help but feel that I'm on the beach, and literally having waves crash down, causing a mist to come my way. Same as the last, I love the presentation on the palate with this glass. Some sweetness on the palate, and very tasty indeed. I can't quite pick out exactly what the sweet taste is though. Also that lovely oily mouth feel, I could chew on this forever. Lots of gentle peat and smokiness in the finish.
