Good 'ol Wild Turkey 101

Still in New Mexico, and out of the good stuff (Laph, T10, and HP). I did not want to get Glenlivet 12 (or Bowmore Legend), or a blend which is all I can get around here , so thought I would get something from my youth, Wild Turkey 101. I read all the WT reviews here on the site and MJ and JM and others loved it. I used to drink it with Coke in my youth, but from the reviews it really sounded like it would be great neat or with ice. Boy was that right! Most bourbon that I like with Coke (Knob Creek, Maker's Mark) are just overwhelming with corn sweetness when straight, but WT 101 is just amazing. Almost like an SMS...and cheap as well.

Nose: Honey and heavy fruits.

Mouth: Chocolate, rye bread, honey

Finish: A bit spicy (rye maybe?), long.

101 proof, yet absolutely no alcohol tinge or burn. Just amazing, and the finish is even spicier with ice.

I agree, a nice bourbon that is available just about anywhere and very inexpensive.

Wild Turkey was my introduction into bourbon, and something that I'm willing to get a bottle of again.

Alas, not in my neck of the woods, where the powers that be (i.e. the Societe des Alcools de Quebec) insist on only listing the 40%ABV version - a very faint echo of the 101 suitable for little more than marinades, bastes and sauces.

WT 101 is a staple here. If you want to step it up a notch try the Rare Breed.

I am sorry TTD, I agree that the 80 proof is just not up to snuff.

When I get back to Texas (and near my Spec's) I would like to get Wild Turkey Rare Breed. The reviews here sound awesome!

Wild Turkey 101 is good, basic bourbon. WT uses more rye in the grain bill than anybody but Four Roses and Jim Beam's (via National Distillers) Old Grand-Dad mashbills.
That said, it ain't as good as it used to be, when it was 8 years old domestically. Today, our overseas brethren have the best of it, with all the 8yo being export-only. The domestic 101 is a blend of 4-, 6-, and 8-year old anymore -- a poor substitute for 'real' Wild Turkey 101, bottled prior to the mid-'90s.

WT 101 is part of my staple bourbons. Has yet to let me down thus far.
