Your top 5 bang for your buck whiskys

Postby dramtastic » Thu Apr 22, 2010 8:12 am

You know how it goes, funds are tight but you still want to drink good quality whisky. So what are your top 5 bang for your buck whisky's that are readily available?

Mine would be

Talisker 10
Aberlour 10
Nikka From the Barrel CS
Nikka Pure Malt White
Bailie Nicol Jarvie

That lot would give me a range flavors of peat, smoke, nuts, spice, honey, wood, sherry and fruit to enjoy.

Talisker 10: always on sale somewhere

Lagavulin 16: many supermarket deals here

Lagavulin 12 (2004): This really isn't a BFYB dram, but I include it because it is a stellar dram, at a great price, and still readily available (A particular enoteca here bought a ton of the stuff years ago and has kept it at the same selling price). At least for now, it is a BFYB whisky in my neck of the woods.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask

Wilson & Morgan 'Peaty Five': Under 20 euros and provides a great peaty fix.

#6-7 might be Finlaggan and The Ileach. I would have included the Longrow CV and Glendronach 15yo 'Revival' as I think they are very good whiskies at a low price. However, since I can't actually get them here, they couldn't make my list.

Hm,

Laphroaig 10 @$30
HP 12 @ $36 (last ones I got but variable in price)
Aberlour a'bunadh @ $52
Bowmore Legend @ $25 ($20 when I get the sales price)
Auchentoshan Select @ $25 (I've yet to try the Classic @ $30)

Ok, you could throw in Ardbeg Ten when I can get it under $45. Talisker 10 does not fit the bill @ $50.

First of all a warm welcome on this forum MARS. It's nice to have another Belgian here.

In no particular order:
- Laph quarter cask
- Laph 10yo CS
- Ardbeg 10yo
- Ardbeg Uigeadail
- BNJ

Difficult but here goes:

HP 12
Talisker 10
Bunny 12
Craggy 12
Springbank 10

It will change next week when I will substitute a couple for Ardbeg 10 and Lagavulin 16 with maybe a Glenlivet thrown in. I could add Glenfiddich or Glenmorangie on some days, and mustn't forget the Caol ila or Old Pulteney. Maybe Strathy 12 would get a look in!

I didn't think that this would be so hard!!!! :o

I forgot to say what I generally pay for the whiskys on my list.
Prices in Australian dollars remembering that 1 Aussie dollar equals around 92-93 US cents at the moment about 60 pence and 70 euro.

Tali 10 $75
Aberlour 10 $50
Nikka From the Barrel $20
Nikka Pure Malt White $16 but can on occasion be bought cheaper
BNJ $35

The Japanese I buy in Japan but I know the ones on my list are readily available from specialist whisky retailers in the UK and Europe these days.

OP12 was in with a shot at $55 but I wanted some sherry in my diet.

As a comparo to what some of you all can bargian buy, here you will pay for the following

Laph QC $100
Laga 16 $100
Caol Ila 12 $100
Laga 12 $120 and I've seen it up to $175 :o
A'bunadh $105
Nadurra $100

Peoples' responses are, of course, going to vary widely depending on local availability and pricing.

In my neck of the woods, the following remain under CDN$80, which, to me, constitutes a bargain given the quality of the whiskies:

Aberlour a'bunadh
Ardbeg 10 Year Old
Elijah Craig 12 Year Old
Glenlivet Cask Strength Nàdurra 16 Year Old
Talisker 10 Year Old

Honourable mention to:

Redbreast 12 Year Old

These get snapped up when on offer, especially: all under £25 at such times(even got a Talisker for £17 recently!!)

Talisker 10
OP12
Ardbeg 10
Macallan 10(currently @£25 from Waitrose -a little more than Aberlour 10, but IMO that much better to me)

..and I've recently seen both Abunadh and Nadurra for under £30 - great VFM depending on your mood!!(see other thread) and each big BFYB whiskies!

Again it is relative to your local costs but here in BC....where ardbeg 10 is $94 and the Uigeadail is $134, Laga 16 is $125, Laga DE is $145 and Balvenie 12 DW is $76. consider CAD and USD at par right now too!

Anything around $80ish is usually the breakpoint for "bang for the buck" here.

Glenfiddich 15yr at $68 is pretty good
Craggenmore 12 at $76 is ok
Compass Box Oak Cross for $60 is great!

I would say Ardmore Traditional Cask @ £21 takes a hell of a lot of beating , and to me has its nose in the lead.

Closely followed by Talisker 10.

After these , there is a close packed field all jockeying for position, all great scotches (Too many to mention).

:)

We get the royal shaft here in BC!!!

However, for the rest of the world, I would say that these are my favourite "non bank breaker" whiskies (in ~USD):

Laphroaig Cask Strength is definitely number one... $50
Ardbeg Uigeadail: $60
Talisker 10 $50 - (or the 18yo if you can find it! $75)
Glenmorangie Lasanta or Aberlour A'bunadh ~$45-50
Lagavulin 16 $65 (or the 18yo CS if you can find it for cheap @$75)

Cheers!

I agree, Knolly, we are paying ridiculous prices in BC. I will now do my shopping at duty free stores or in Alberta. Got a litre of Ardbeg 10 at the border for $48, a litre of JW Green for $46. Got a Laphroig 18 in Portland for $90.
BC price for Macallan 18, $249, Alberta price $149,
HP 18, BC $149, Alberta $101.
Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist, BC $135, Alberta $91.50
Almost everything is 20-40% cheaper.
Check out Kensington Wine Market in Calgary, they are online and have a huge selection, tons of stuff we never see in BC. They will take an order, package it up and have Purolator pick it up and deliver to BC.

You've got to include Aberlour 12 in the group. In Dallas you can find it for $ 30.00 though most places have it for $ 39.00

Others include
Tamdhu
Laphroaig 10
Ardbeg 10
The Speyside -12 yr single

in beazil is real hard to find single malt whisky.when you find is real espensive, for this evebody here drink blended.i need to imported single malts from europe to prove i make this in next month.at this moment my 5 here in brazil is:

black label
teacher´s
buchanan´s
logan
famous grouse finest

only single malts you can find here is glenffidich 12 years and glenlivet 12 years for 200 r$ you can buy 2 bottle of black label or 4 bottle from teachrs.so i think this is too much money for a normal whisky, and i never tried this i be waiting for a friend coming from spain for buying talisker, lagavulin and highland park to me for 167 r$.

I just started educating myself about Irish whiskey because I have to plan an Irish Whiskey Tasting in October as part of my job.

So, after researching on the web, I went to an upscale Irish pub and ordered what was recommended. My favorites so far are:

Redbreast 12 year
Midleton Rare
Bushmill Black label
Jamison Very Rare
Tallamore Dew

Mine would be:

1) Laphroaig Cask Stegth - the CS has to better bang for your buck
2) Glenfiddich 15YO - not sure about elsewhere in teh world but seems underpriced when I bought on promotion this XMas at £28
3) The Glendronnach 12YO - incredible sherry for less than £30
4) Knob Creek - my favoutire Bourbon which has real flvour - currently £25 at TWE
5) Monkey Shoudler - the quality (if not complexity/finish) of a malt at the price of a blend - £20 ish.

The last Bow Legend was a bit off. :(

However, the Tamdhu 10 @ $21 is a wonderful dram and the Tomatin 12 is well worth prices under $25. Also should add in the Glenfiddich 15, especially when I find it under $30 and Pulteney 12 @ $30 is very good whisky.
