All great relative values, and this combination provides a nice range of flavor profiles.

On the bubble were Redbreast 12 and Yamazaki 12, and I would have loved to include Talisker 10, but they need to bring it back down below $50 here. Also, I'd replace Mac 12 with Glendronach 12 if the 'dronach price was more competitive.

Hard to argue with those choices. I do have to say that when it comes to Talisker the 25 is so far out in front of the younger ones. It certainly provides me with more bang for the buck than say the distiller's edition.

Well, it depends a little. Laga 12 varies quite a bit in price. the 2009 was $60 but the 2010 ran north of $90. Ardbeg 10 really has gone up over the last several years. It's a good buy @ $45 and under but for the most part they're asking more like $55. I'd rather get Laphroaig 10 CS for that price point or maybe even and Oogie.

Whisky prices keep going up in spite of the crises, so this is a good question!

1. JW Red. King of the cheapest in my country (Denmark). Easily available on discount for 100 DKK, which is roughly 11 pounds.

2. Four Roses bourbon. 18 pounds in Denmark.

3. Buffalo Trace bourbon. 22.75 pounds TWE

4. Elija Craigh 12 y. boubon 25.95 pounds TWE.

5. Jameson 12 y. 28 pounds in Denmark.

The US whisky prices haven't changed that much the past few years, giving bourbons an edge..

Hmm, prices for certain things have taken jumps and there have been decreases as well here. Laphroaigs are typically beyond their value in California. However Ardbeg 10 can be had for $44. A'bunadh still can be had under $60. OP 12 is still around $30. Glenfiddich is still good value under $40. And I can snag Glenmo 10 for $56 (1.75L).

One that I haven't tried yet but is in the neighborhood of $50 is the new Hakushu. I'm interested.

Times do indeed change. The a'bunadh has risen rather significantly in price in my neck of the woods, as has the Ardbeg. Both are now firmly out of 'BFYB territory', as far as I'm concerned. I'm not quite as partial to recent issues of the Elijah Craig. And the Talisker, while still a fine pour, doesn't represent a true bargain these days either.

Currently (and taking local pricing into account), I'll vouch for the following:

BenRiach 12 Year Old, Matured in Sherry Wood (ex-Pédro Ximénez and Oloroso oak, and borderline sensational, especially for the money)
Douglas Laing Big Peat (delectably Islay)
Glenfarclas '105' 10 Year Old (consistently tasty and notably less expensive than a'bunadh)
Glenlivet Cask Strength Nàdurra 16 Year Old (still an excellent value)
Laphroaig Quarter Cask (youngish, yet very well rounded and a 'sure-bet' buy)

All the Laphroaig lineup has gone nuts in California. QC has surpassed the $50 mark (some places around $70). The standard 10 is between $40 and 50 now. 10 CS is around $75.

Our 105 is no age statement although it is likely the same product. The 105 runs more than a'bunadh here.

Just goes to show you how regional variations in cost can affect our perceptions of value. Here in Québec, the 10YO Laphroaig is MORE expensive than the QC, and the cask strength edition isn't even available (shame!).

i'm new to this, but so far, i have to say that the laphroaig 10 yo is the best bang for the buck i've tasted. at about $45/bottle it's nearly half the price of lagavulin 16 and has a very similar feel to me.
