Glenrothes Single Malt vintage choice?

Postby vcdman » Sun Oct 10, 2010 12:55 am

I was thinking about getting one or two different vintages of these. Does anyone know which years are the better ones to get?
I could choose from: 1985, 1988, 1991, 1994, or 1998.

Any help would be appreciated.

The 1985 is very good. 1989 and 1991 are much less so.

I find the 1991 far the best

It's a pure ex-bourbon cask whisky

Cheers vcd,

I have had this whole line in the last year:
"I could choose from: 1985, 1988, 1991, 1994, or 1998."

I really do like the 1985 the best, but each of the vintages are very different. So it kind of depends on what you are looking for. The 85 is more of a rich contemplative dram (more sherry cask influence). Where the 1994 and 1998 are more of a light, before dinner dram. They pretty much pick the vintages to express different things. They are not trying to just make the same thing over and over in younger and older formats.

One thing to do is, check the label. They give 'characteristics'.. You can check out the label notes on their website:

See if you like the notes and go for it.

Cheers,

I would go for the 1985. To complement it, you could choose the 1994 (because it's very different from the 85 - that way you have a nice "range") or the 1998 (because it's very nice considering its age - that way you have the best two options in my opinion).
