This weekend is the Kentucky Derby, and the official drink is the Mint Julep. Of course, at the Derby, the MJ's are made with Woodford's Reserve bourbon. I'll be making mine with either Ancient Age or Wild Turkey 101. Might even try using Baker's. Who knows. I'll definitely have several to experiment.
Here is my recipe:
2 tsp. powdered or superfine sugar
1 1/2 tsp water
mint extract to taste
3 oz. bourbon of choice
Take a highball/On-the-rocks/Collins glass and put in the sugar and water in the bottom. Stir the water/sugar about 12 revolutions - just enough to start a good mixture.
Add mint extract - I use an eyedropper and add about 20-25 drops.
Add 3-4 ice cubes.
Add the bourbon. You can use any whiskey, I guess.
Add about 5 more drops of mint extract.
Stir the whole concoction about 5-6 revolutions.
Enjoy.
If done right, at the end you will have a nice sweet minty bourbon syrup on the bottom of the glass.
Repeat as required.
I use the mint extract as it is more convenient than growing mint and crushing it, etc......and it doesn't spoil.
