Balvenie Portwood 21yo, 40% vs. 47%

Anyone tried the two expressions side by side?

I've had them both before but for the first time ended up with a bottle of each at the same time and thought it would be rude not to.

I love this whisky, I've had several bottles over the years but I was surprised that I actually enjoyed the 40% dram more. I found the 47% less well rounded, spicier but thinner and less concentrated in the deep fruityness of the port cask that I was expecting.

Can anyone confirm if there was actually a 43% bottling at some point?
