The other night at the D Marie's Bourbon Bar I did a side by side tasting of the Van Winkle ryes. I made some quick notes and thought I would post them here for those interested.
Old Rip Van Winkle Old Time Rye 12 YO 90 proof
Color: Rich Amber
Nose: Oak wood and cloves. A hint of pepper and vanilla.
Taste Caramel toffey with pepper spice and honey.
Finish: Smooth and long with a sweet honey vanilla after taste that lasted for several minutes.
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 YO 95.6 proof
Color: Dark Amber
Nose: Honey and spice - nutmeg, vanilla and a bit of allspice.
Taste: Smokey dry oak with a spiciness that is common to good rye whiskey - clove and nutmeg maybe a hint of a sweeter spice.
Finish: very dry oak wood.
