Highland Park 15yo (dumpy bottle early 2000s)

Found this one at a liquor store in Huntington Beach en route to the OC Fair. Just opened.

Color: Dark brown, looking a bit like a very old tawny
Nose: Woodsy cologne, orange peel liqueur, baby's breath, sand, honey
Palate: High-toned and orangey, the honey hits late and hard balanced with the sweet woodsy perfume you would expect from old sherry
Finish: Long and strong; the bonfire smokiness (which is focused and pure) is well concealed only appearing as a late accent

I don't share the critics' unbridled enthusiasm for Highland Park, but this is one of the better ones. A bit clunky right now, some time in the open bottle may smooth it out.

I do share the enthusiasm for older bottlings of HP, especially the dumpy's with the slanted (not rounded) shoulders from pre-2000. Seems like we should do an HP tasting sometime...I have a few post 2000 12s and at least one pre 2000.
