What was the 1st Single Malt Whisky You tried?

Mine was Isle of Jura 10yo which from many people I have spoken to is a great introductory single malt.

Ditto along with Glenfiddich 12. Although my first single malt revelations were Lagavulin 16 and Glenlivet 18. I had not previously known that kind of pleasure from a taste.

We sell our malt of the month (Glen Garioch 15yo this month) for £1.50 for a 25ml and £2.50 for 50ml. Our cheapest blend is at £1.90. Pot still has Bowmore 12yo for £1.95 for a 35ml measure

As I recall, Glenrothes 1985. A crime! I had three bottles of the stuff and had no idea what I was doing. Didn't find my palate at all until I discovered Lagavulin--peat smoke is easy! Wish I had those three bottles back. (Heh heh...I still have one.)

Amazing!

My first was a Glenfiddich no-age-statemnt fed me by a girl friend before we went to bed...did nothing for me but get me drunk enough to....

But it was a gift, or should i say "bribe' (geezer wanted me to play some toons at his party so offered me a litre bottle of this whisky with a funny name...i liked the label and accepted)

it was Lagavulin 16...from the moment i opened that bottle and took a sniff, i was intrigued...and now i'm addicted.

Amazing that such a smoky, complex and initially mysterious whisky should be so many people's entry into this wonderful world!

I'm amazed. The margins they collect on whisky here are criminal.

Local CA beers can be found for $4-5 a pint, but it's hard to find a _drink_ that costs less than $6. Scotch whisky is usually $8 and upward for a measured ounce.

Mine was a Laphroaig 10yo. Put me off for a long time until I eventually got used to my Dad's Glenfiddich. Like many of the posters above I started to take my dram really seriously on my first taste of Lagavullin 16yo.

Not sure really. It might have been years ago, when I had no curiosity or interest in single malts or whisky. Then Lagavulin 16y was served to me with coke and ice, and smelling something truly special through all that junk I asked for whatever it was in another glass, neat. It got me wondering. Finally, it was Ardbeg Ten that truly caught my attention and pushed me towards Single Malt Scotch Whisky, and eventually all other whiskies of the world.

At some 22 years ago I think it was either a Glenlivet 12 or Glenfiddich 12 ....on ice! :oops:

First malt was HP 12 - I was around twenty or so. No big impression.

Years later, a friendly bartender introduced me to Lagavulin 16yo and the rest is history....

Same as Wave above - Glenfiddich with ice back in 1991. Had several bottles through the years but was reborn 3 years ago with Ardbeg Ten.

Being a seasoned Blackbush drinker I was in Edinburgh many moons ago and decided to get my hands on a Single Malt. I bought a bottle of some 12 yo version of Bowmore and when I got home I popped it open and was very dissappointed. I had had teachers before that but and thought it was okay but I stayed away from scotch for a good few years after that but I leaned th error of my ways.

Note: I did not even know the difference between a blend and a single malt then ..... I sometimes I still don't unless I read the label :wink:

Balvenie DW, within 10 days I bought another 3 bottles(Laphroaig 10, Macallan 12 and Highland Park 12). My appreciation was immediate.

The first Single Malt I tried was Glenfiddich Special Reserve NAS, it was in college and the only reason I remember it is I'm still using the tin to store stuff in.

I trully got hooked on single malts at a tasting at Clancy's in Tilburg, Netherlands (Great place 250+ malts to choose from and tastings every wednesday) and funny enough it was a tasting of all the Connemmara expressions. (I guess it wasn't that odd since it was an Irish Pub) The next week I trully got hooked when the bar owner put together a special tasting for me that was the alternatives to the common bar malts, Balvenie 10 yrs, Caol Ila 12 yr, Glenfarclas 10 yrs and one last one I can't remember.

The funny thing is I've now visited all these distilleries and they are some of my favorite drams.

I tried a glass of Glenfiddich a few times, and didn't think much of it. Then one day I had some Highland Park 18 yr old, and have been hooked ever since.

Started with Glenlivet 12yo also, up from J & B blend then it snowballed from there, less than 2 years later 127 malts under my belt. :wink:

Glenfiddich 12, was everywhere here, and cheap to add.
we would drink it with ice! in summer.

Then my brothers girl friend got a job for the distributor of diagio.

We got the classic malts very cheap.and the ice disappeared.

Lagavulin 16 was the one that got my interest going, then it slowly followed to whatever new i could try.

A retailer that had a good selection was brought out by a big liquor chain and they reduced and cleared all the malts. I spent as much money as i could afford at the time ( for fear of not being able to get the malts anywhere else )close to 20 bottles.
That was the start of my obsession

Also my Dad's Glenfiddich special reserve. He only got it out at Christmas and it was treated reverentially. I wasn't allowed it until I was old enough to appreciate it - about 20.

My first malt was a present from my missus, Laphroaig 10. When I tasted it I thought - what the hell have you bought! By the end of the bottle I was hooked.

As a number of others - Glenfiddich Special Reserve was my first

The 2nd was Lagavulin 16yo - then I was hooked on Islay's

Now I have moved on - and enjoying malts from every region i Scotland

It's been so long since I had Glenfiddich... I barely remember it. After reading this thread, I'm kind of thinking of buying a bottle just to refresh my memory. Any suggestions on a bottling I should try?

The 15 Solera Reserve gets the most praise around here. The 18 is very nice, and a little more in keeping with the house character.

Good call, Thesh. I really enjoy both the 15 and the 18. I wish I could afford some of the older expressions, too.

The first single malt I ever tried was Laphoaig 10, and I quickly followed it with a Bowmore Cask Strength. Had I not already been drunk and numb when I started on the whisky that night in Harrogate, I might never have fallen prey to the whisky bug.
