Storing whisky upright or lying down?

Postby hearts151 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 7:38 pm

Whats the best way to store whisky thats for collection? Does the cork get effected at all? Just I heard that wines corks can get dried out if its upright and I am new to all this collection business so wasn't sure!
Thanks

Cheers Ryan,

Storage of Whisky should be upright. The alcohol content of Whisky can deteriorate the cork. Also there is enough evaporation in the bottle to keep the cork moist for a long time. For a sealed bottle, pretty much indefinably (unless tampered with). For an open bottle it should be good for years or at least until you are down to the last bit of Whisky in the bottle. Then you can work on finishing it off or transfer into a smaller container.

Cheers,

Yep as mikeymad wrote, keep them upright as the whisky will eat the cork. My only other bit of advice would be to check your bottles once a year or so to make sure there's no significant evaporation.

As well as storing the whisky upright, make sure it is out of the sunlight.

Thanks very much everyone. I though upright was the way to do it but someone mentioned wine being on its side so the cork didn't dry out so it made me question myself haha.
Cheers
