Show Off Your Inventory

Crispy Critter was kind enough to share with us a listing of the bottles he has at home elsewhwere, and I thought it might be appropriate to start a thread wherein others may show off their inventories. I'm not sure Collector's Corner is the appropriate choice, but I don't know what else would be. Besides, I wanted to put this somewhere where it could easily be ignored by those who are put off by such naked displays of ostentation.

(I would add here that I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but I am a bachelor with an unusually inexpensive living arrangement. As well, I get credits from a duty-free shop by virtue of my job, and so am fortunate enough to be able to pick up a lot of basic stuff essentially for free.)

I hope others among you will feel free to share your inventories with us, however modest or not, so we can all decide whose doorstep to show up at on our next holiday! (Don't come here.)

A Provenance open and another (one?) in reserve... wpt, your list isn't all that long, but a pair of aces trumps me! And Aidan, this Scotch snob is impressed with your array, as well. We have a tendency to think that there are only three or four Irish whiskeys available ...thanks for the eye-opener.

i just opted to go the route of a having fewer but "choice" whiskys around rather than having a larger suite to draw upon. after perusing your selections i would hardly say that my pair of aces trumps your flush though.

And I'm sure my claim that Midleton 25 is the greatest whisk(e)y of any type will infuriate many scotch snobs, but that's why I'm saying it .

Ha - that's true Ed. And Canadian - that could drive scotch drinkers over the edge...

Unfortunately, the Midleton 25 is now selling for between 500 and 600 euro.

Dan, I don't know if you can get Balvenie 15 where you are, but it would be a good replacement for the 12. It's the best of the readily available Balvenies, in my book. And despite what you say about Islays, you're probably ripe for an Ardbeg 10, if you haven't tried it yet.

What do you think of the Glen Breton? I sampled a very early bottling and it was terrible--eau de jet fuel. I've been waiting for an opportunity to try a more recent bottling, but the stuff's a tad pricey for what it is, as I'm sure you're aware.

Wow, that is quite a list! I notice that you have the Nikka Pure Malt White OB. I really like that and can get it pretty cheap here in Japan, around 1450 yen, I have really wanted to hear what others on the list think of this, but I didn't think many have had a chance to try it? What do you think? Also, have you had a chance to try the Nikka Pure Malt Black? That is another favorite of mine.

So far, the only Canadians I've tried have been two of the Forty Creek bottlings: Barrel Select and Three Grain. Both have been very nice. They are blends of barley malt, rye, and maize, each distilled separately in a pot still and aged separately before blending. No age statement on either bottling, but I don't think they're "immature" whiskies.

In Chicago they're under $20 a bottle, and mighty good. I'm surpised that Kittling Ridge (the distiller) doesn't bottle a single malt, but capacity might be an issue...

I actually visited Kittling Ridge a few years ago--it's in the Niagara wine region--and was impressed with their operation, a rare Canadian pot still distillery (is Glenora the only other one?). Unfortunately I didn't get to see their stillhouse. As I recall, the only people I spoke to were not as knowledgeable as one might like--or maybe it was me! I wish I could stop in again--I have a much better idea now of what sort of questions I'd like to ask them. I also wonder why they don't make a single malt. I'm sure they would make a decent one. Maybe they don't want to invest in the storage time.

I would add, CC, that Forty Creek is hardly typical of Canadian whisky in general, as I understand it.

While I do have 30 or so bottles open right now, I actually haven't opened the Nikka yet, nor have I tried any other variety Nikka. Maybe once I get over this cold I'll give it a go!

Yeah, the Ardbeg is calling to me every time I go to the local... I think I can get it at a fairly decent price.

As a Canadian, I felt I should try it. It isn't great, but its drinkable. Reminds me of Bruichladdich, which I liken to salty gasoline follewed by milk chocolate. The Glen Breton is a bit raunchy start, but has a great dark chocolate and walnut finish (if there's any Canadians here who have ever eaten a Tim Horton's walnut crunch, that's the finish of Glen Breton).

Uhhh, my wife is not that big...

nor is mine, but unfortunately she has a saying in where most things go in our/her livingroom such as : speakers (the worst) , whisky, furniture, me, the dog etc. Most women tend to dislike a lot of bottles etc. - at least mine does, but luckily she doesn't mind me drinking whisky or my moderate collection of Islay whiskies.

Which Bruichladdich is that? An old bottling, maybe? I still see some around in Canada now and then. It's really amazing what a difference there is between the old bottlings and the new, given that the inventory hasn't changed--a vivid demonstration of the evils of chill-filtering.

Mmmmm.... Tim Horton's.... (But make mine Second Cup, where available.)

As for nuclear war Christian; I've never quite trusted them pesky swedes - who knows.....? (and I live close to the border as well, you're all the way over on the left side...)
For two and a half years now I've been travelling to Denmark every three weeks, thus most of my collection has been carried across on my shoulders. Nothing big, just the EU quota.

One of the benefits of having my fiancée study in Denmark, is that she's on the look out for offers, and asks all the time if she should pick up this or that, one bottle or two?
That's pretty nice of her, considering that she detests the stuff herself....

Although I have my favourites, I'm also inherently curious and wish to taste EVERYTHING for my self - this is why my collection so far does not contain - say; eight different Lagavulins or what have you.
I wish to explore the magic and mystery of all distilleries ( a bit of a romantic I suppose...... )
Even the much maligned Tobermory has something sweet to offer, so there!

In the past I've often lamented that I'd never earn enough money to drink myself to death - well, I think I'm past that hurdle now...

If you could find eight different Lagavulins, you'd probably be a legend in the whisky world--they're pretty tight with that stuff! You don't see too many ib's. Murray lists 10 total, one at least is a 2nd release (12yo), although he only lists one DE. Even the Malt Maniacs show only 13, as opposed to 18 Bunnahabhains, 24 Laphroaigs, 31 Bruichladdichs, 37 Caol Ilas, 53 Bowmores, and 57 Ardbegs. (Hell, a lot of folks haven't had 57 drams of Ardbeg.)

Now someone show us your collection of 37 Lagavulins....

I admit Lagavulin was an ill adviced example, think I'll put it down to wishful thinking; Lagavulin is my definite favorite! (so far)
Not very original I know, but ever since my first sip in 1992 I've really loved that whisky.

As for bottlings, the wine merchant who sold me a Finlaggan CS more than hinted that IT was a Lagavulin. Maybe, but I can't help wondering why they should bother selling off stock when they can't even meet their own demand? Tastewise... well, again maybe - but I keep thinking Caol Ila - any one out there in the know?
