MrTattieHeid wrote:My reaction to the Scapa was also that it was rather weak and watery, and I found myself wishing they'd bottled at 46%, or at least 43%. But I learned to enjoy it on its own terms eventually. A nice summer dram, maybe.

It's strange, I do not find it weak at all... Quite good whisky IMO and nice as an inexpensive everyday dram. But generally it's the kind of whisky you should start a dramming evening with - most youngish, 40% drams would probably be lacking, if tasted right after an aged cask strength.

Is the shotgun for defense of the inventory? If so I approve.

The shotgun is for defending the liquor (Scotch is first priority) and for all my Pink Floyd LP/CDs.

I have to update my pictures....I have a few bottles that I haven't got in there yet.

What's the Michel Couvreur Special Vatted Malt like? I've read about it but never tasted it and welcome to the forum.

Yow! I was born in Framingham! The attending physician said, "Lo, thou hast borne a son, Mrs Heid! Verily, 'tis a blessing!"

That's quite a nice little collection you have there, DIF--more interesting stuff there than in many much larger inventories. Where did you get the SoS Ardbeg? I got a sample of it from Joe Howell at Federal in Boston (I'll have to check to see if it's the same one)--in fact still have a bit of it left.

The Michel Couvreur is a special vatting of 3 distinct Single Malts that have been matured at 10, 12 and 14 years old. It is 45% abv.

It's a neat game to try to guess the three malts (I still don't know which they are: my guess? Cragganmore, Aberlour, Glendronach).

My tasting notes on this one:

Nose: Smooth and soft; baby oil, fruit cocktail cherries; in time well-oiled baseball glove, whiff of cardamom

Palate: Soft and round. Cherry wood resin, dried orange peel, slight tannin undertones, mild mineral oil

Finish: Smooth and balanced. With time, out comes crushed vanilla bean, canned peaches, dried apricots. Medium length. Lacks bite.

Comments: My first entry into the "vatted" category. Digestif. Seems a bit forced at first, like it doesn't know what it wants to be (perhaps by design?) but in time develops a nice vatted complexity that makes for great discourse at parties or private tastings. ( One newbie friend to Scotch said it tasted like "sweat filtered through dirty socks" !! ). Curiously, my bottle is stamped at the bottom, "Bottle No. 00028", but doesn't indicate total number of bottles nor a cask #.

Thanks, MrTattieHeid! Most of my collection is "Joe Howell-inspired". The tastings held at Federal in Boston have led to most of my purchases.

The SoS Ardbeg is from Federal...a limited-quantity, Joe special that he brought in late last Summer.

I really can't say enough about Joe Howell (and Federal Wine & Spirits in general). He is my "Retailer of the Year."

Life's too short to drink uninteresting whisky. And there's always something interesting on offer in his shop. Perhaps I'll catch you at a tasting there in the near future, MrTattieHeid.

Were you at the McEwan event a few weeks ago? See my report of same under Whisky Events.

Joe raved about that Ardbeg--claimed it rated higher than Provenance. I had half of my sample and liked it a lot, but.... Now I'm afraid to finish it. There really isn't enough to get to know it. I'd like to be ready for it, anyway.

I missed out on the McEwan event last month, but I was able to "recruit" two friends to go. They said Mr. McEwan was quite a character and loved the evening.

Yeah, that SoS Ardbeg is wonderful . Lucky for me, I have half a bottle left

Only problem with traveling is that I'm rarely home to Taste my collection which is why there are so many unopened bottles. I have made it a point to try every bottle before I've bought it or it gets opened when I get home. By the way if there is anyone in the Cleveland/Akron area of Ohio that has tastings and would be interested in some new blood let me know.

You've been busy! An impressive collection for six months but remember once opened you have about 18 months to two years to finish the bottles before the whisky falls apart due to exposure to oxygen.

The time frame is dependant on what the whisky to air ratio is. The more air in the bottle the shorter time the whisky will remain stable. A couple of final ounces will last a very short time.

Drink up!

Thanks for the advice Lawrence

That is the biggest problem I have right now I havn't opened a bottle in a few months because I'm having a hard time finishing the bottles I have open right now. I'm headed back to The Netherlands in a few months so I plan on taking most of the Bourbon I have open with me to share and try to convert some friends I have there so that will help me but what I would really like is to find a group that would like to do regular tastings so I can open more bottles or at least a group that sends samples to each other so that I could divide a bottle among 10 peolple or so and send them samples. If you know any groups like this let me know. I have alot of bottles on the shelf I would love to open but can't.

Chivas Regal

Postby leura » Mon May 15, 2006 12:49 pm

I have a bottle of Chivas Regal, bottled in 1978, it was bought in London and is probably around 40 years old.
Can someone, please, tell me is it worth any deal of money?

Arebee - Hello from a fellow member of the Nutmeg state & welcome to the forum.

I'm curious, where do you shop for single malts? I've found it to be a bit of a challenge to find interesting or bargan-ish priced malts in the State.

My two official Ooooglings arrived today so I made the time to update my collection and also my website.
The great news is that I have reached the next "Milestone" in my collection!

Yes, 350 bottles in my personal collection.

I have just uploaded the changes so they are online for all to see in my Bavarian Cellar.

http://www.whisky-emporium.com

My thanks to Ardbeg for some lovely recent additions, to Slyrs in Schliersee for yet another annual bottling and also to one of our Irish forum members for helping me to source the old Laddie 10 "West" (Blue Box).
Finally, my thanks to an ever-understanding Bank Manager!
