Lagavulin 16 was the one triggering me into Islay whiskies. Today I prefer Ardbeg and some Caol Ila's. And of course Bruichladdich for non-peaty Islay's.

But I'm for ever thankful for Laga16 pointing me in the right direction, and really looking forward to open the 12yo CS.

Finlaggan is rumoured to be Lagavulin, maybe so because the name make it sell better. Personally I believe it to be a Caol Ila, and Jim Murray give some hints in the same direction in his Whisky Bible 2004.

Thanks Karl Ejnar, then maybe my tastebuds aren't totally off after all!
Any Islay will do it for me, which one depends on the current mood only :D
Though I still think the Lagavulin 16 offer the most "complete package", and in perfect balance to boot.

Arden, hmm, just a few clicks south of my Danish address - any sensible stores there?

I'd think that if it were a Lagavulin, it would be a young one. I haven't tried it (or its brother "Classic of Islay", bottled by the same company), but, since (a) Lagavulin is in short enough supply that its availability in any given region is spotty, and, (b) Caol Ila is a very high-output distillery that is mainly there to serve blending houses (to the point of custom-distilling to the blenders' specs with different peating levels), that it's most likely to be a Caol Ila.

The Classic of Islay bottlings I've seen have been NAS, 12, and 21 year old.

I must say, though, that, "industrial" or not, the Caol Ilas I've had (Sig UCF and OB 18yo) have been very satisfying.

Just to play devil's advocate, 16yo Lagavulin is in short supply. There may well be a very healthy supply of 6-8yo.

None that carry malt whisky, except for Glen Moray in "Fakta" (Coop) and the odd Macallan or Laphroaig in "Brugsen" (another Coop)

Bought the GM 8yo & 12yo lately when on offer, to vertical taste against the 16yo I got for my last birthday.

Most indie's CI are very good, and the OB CS IMHO too.

I think Caol Ila could be a worthy replacement for Port Ellen, if Diageo would just see the light. And get rid of the Lagavulin stored in their warehouse, and make a truly Islay matured Caol Ila.
A bit strange Diageo Islay's are in strong demand, and they got the smallest storage area on the island, only some 19.000 casks according Andrew Jefford in "Peat, Smoke and Spirit".

All right,
that's the same as in Aalborg, I too have picked up a handful of the Glen Moray 16, 12 and 8 at Fakta lately. They had them on special deal a few weeks ago - and they were cheap from the start....

There are some impressive collections posted here, I won't bother posting mine- at least not at this point.

Bamber,

I can't say that I've ever gotten much from the few American whiskies and bourbons I've sampled but I have been keen to try Buffalo Trace. However, I can't find it anywhere. Have you tried it and what do you think of it?

Dan G wrote:... last night I finished a bottle of Balvenie Double Wood. Any suggestions on what should replace it? I'm a bit heavy on the Islay and Island whiskys already, so a recommendation for another Highland, Lowland or Speysider would be appreciated.

I'd be tempted to try a lowlander, since that would be a different animal from those you've listed. The only three lowland distilleries in operation that I know of are: Auchantoshan, Glenkinchie, and Bladnoch. By process of elimination, Auchantoshan = nothing special (some may say bland), and Glenkinchie is nice, but is no louder than Dalwinnie although with a more citrus flavour profile. MY thought - get some info on Bladnoch, and then make an assessment!

Though not operating there are some other lowlanddistilleries where there are available bottlings. Rosebank and St. Magdalene are two of them.

Yeah, those are two of the distillates that get good reviews. There are a lot that I've heard of like Interleven or Littlemill that don't get the same positive feedback.

Frodo

P.S. I did like Rosebank.

I like Buffalo Trace a lot. It's very cheap in the US and well worth trying. If you want a real treat however there is a new release of George T. Stagg being released in the next week in the US.

You really should try and get some.

Hi Oliver:

The best rum I've ever had was Santa Teresa's 1796 (I think that was the date). Not a vintage date, but the brand of a really good rum. I've had the Brugal before - It's really nice. Taste of cloves and silky on the palete. No taste of molasses. :)

The Matusalem 15yr at the LCBO (for C$35) is a good deal also. Silky but with less interesting tastes.

Frodo

P.S. I don't go for Appleton that much because it does have that molasses taste - probably because it's made in a pot still. There are Appleton expressions that I agree are quite good such as the Appleton Extra, but thry're not for me.

My whiskies are occupying the lower shelves as a compromise - the missus decision. Still haven't told her how much the collection will grow in the future though.........
I'll probably end up in the bottom shelve myself one day.

Oooooohh, nice selection Lawrence!
A lot of bottles I'd like to lay my hands on there....

Are they all opened? (doubles excluded of course)
Any favourite?

Wow!!

Lawrence-Query: How'd you get the Ardbeg VY? is it sold in stores in Vancover? Just curious as we don't get any over here.

Old Bollard, they are all unopened.

Frodo, I picked up the Ardbeg Very Young from a lady in Germany and had it mailed to Scotland where I then off loaded them on my brothers for the ride back to Canada, they then sent them to me from Ontario. It was a lot of work. :D
