Rob,

Yes, my collection has mainly been based on Ardbeg.

I had some Port Ellen bottles as well, but they were consumed at my wedding. That was however very popular and definitely worth it!
(I am however already looking for some new and recently bought the 2nd release)

Welcome to the forum Archaon....

Nice little set you have there. And I must say one of the best displays that I have seen.

It is much better than my pile of stuff in a corner style:

Thought I'd chime in with my small collection. Meant exclusively for drinking not collecting...

SCOTCH

Open:
- Laphroaig QC
- Caol Ila 12yr (OMC)
- Brora 20yr (Rare Malts)

Waiting:
- x2 Brora 20yr (Rare Malts)
- Convalmore 24yr (Rare Malts)
- Blair Atholl 27yr (Rare Malts)
- x2 Brora 30yr OB
- x5 Port Ellen 3rd Release
- Bladnoch 1992 CS (J. McArthur)
- Ardbeg 10 OB
- Ardbeg Still Young
- x2 Ardbeg Uigeadail
- Longmorn 12yr (Hart Bros)
- Longmorn 20yr (OMC)
- Longmorn 25yr (G&M)
- Glenmorangie 15 OB

Blended:
- Mac Na Mara Rum Finish

Bourbon (wish I had access to more):
- Bookers

Tequila:
- Don Julio (Blanco)
- El Tesoro (Blanco)
- x2 Los Abuelos (Blanco & Anjeo)
- x3 1921 (Blanco, Reposado & Reserva Especial)

Mezcal:
- Divino (Reposado)
- Del Maguay (Minero)

Legend for tequila/mezcal.
Blanco: distillate must be bottled within 60 days.
Reposado: distillate must be bottled after 60 days. Aging can take place in any container, but usually takes place in Oak barrels.
Anjeo: Distillate must be aged in barrels (less than 250 litres I think) for a minimum of 1 year.
Minero: unique to mezcal. Refers to miners who could afford "the good stuff" thus was born the term "minero". No legal definition that I know of, more of a traditional term. Seems mostly to mean unaged but "better somehow". Sometimes tripple distilled. Mine is not however, and tastes out of this world!!!

How do you like the Bookers?

Hi Jan:

1) More quality bottlings (depending on your definition of the term) because I decided to stockpile against the upcoming "boom" prices. Will always be able to afford that Grant's Ale Cask or the JWB. May not be able to afford a 15yr single malt for much longer.

2) Re: Bookers, I haven't made up my mind yet. I picked up two bottles for $53 cdn (down from $80) and had one of them. By my memory, it had that "tea leaf" taste but would describe it as medium-sweet not dry. Can take a LOT of water, and even at about 40% abv it tastes pretty stong. Not an instant "fall in love" but I had big problems hitting my equalibrium point with the water. Challanging sucker with a big bodied taste! The epitomine of beligerance. Jim Murray descibed tasting this stuff as akin to "dancing with a Grizzly Bear". I see what he meant!

Nice shrine set-up there. Nice malts too. Interesting to note you don't seem to have any session drams.

Maybe those are his session drams, Frodo.

it's late and things are blurry but I'm not actually sure what you mean by 'session drams'. if you mean open bottles, that's what I meant when I said most of them are open (I meant the bottles, not the boxes  ). in fact all but the lag 16 are open at the moment (I actually just finished that bowmore 17, my last bottle :dead: , probably never to be drunk again since it's no longer on the shelf at my local shop)..

must be time to try that new bowmore 18.

By session dram I meant something you could have a bit of a (drinking) session with. For me, that would be Te Bheag, 8yr Sheep Dip, or Grant's Ale or Sherry cask. Perhaps Jim Beam Black. JWB would do in a pinch, but for sessions I'd find it too expensive.

Sorry, I don't mean anything negative by it. It's a great collection you have there. Not a duff bottle in the lot! Nothing that I'd have a session with - too nice!

oh, I see (clearly now :D )

I forgot this is the collector's corner actually, I wouldn't call that pic a collection, it's just what I usually drink (showin' off the inventory).
cheers,

Thanks Les and you are right! The problem is that almost all those bottles are more than 3,000 miles away. What such a kind of list doesn't reveal is the number of bottles that have already been bought and consumed. Still you have provided me with reason to go out an buy so more. Thanks! :)

The current count is somewhere around 380 bottles and in an attempt to test my new 4gb memory card for my camera, I have just been down to check the private cellar .....

Thanks :)
Next is a Higland Park 30yo that is on it's way from Royal Mile Whiskies. I think the Macallan will go down very fast, so I want to have a go at the 18yo to compare them as well..

But.. I am hesitant to get more from the same distilleries. Trying to mix things up a little. So Talisker 10yo, and later possibly the 18yo are definitely on the list. Also might have a little bit more from the mainland. Not sure what though...

Brand new to whisky collecting

Postby mattbuty » Thu Oct 04, 2007 3:21 pm

Hi,

I started collecting just a couple of months ago and find the whole thing very daunting but enjoyable. Clearly I have a lot to learn, but I hope to pick it up as I go along.

This is what I have so far

Braes of Glenlivet 1975 30yo G&M Connoisseurs
Brora 1982 20yo Rare Malts
Dallas Dhu 1981 26yo Duncan Taylor
Serendipity
St Magdalene 1982 24yo Old Malt Cask
Tomintoul 1977 22yo old malt cask

I hope next month to get a port ellen and possibly a Millburn

regards

Welcome to the forums Matt. Looks like a nice list there.

I just want to give you a small hint that I learned the hard way (but only if you also intent to drink some of these): try some of the younger expressions of distilleries as well. When getting used to the flavor of a specific distillery, style, or region, the older, more complex expressions are much more enjoyable. And there are some pretty good 10yo's and 12yo's around.

Then again, this could be your 'collection' list, next to the numerous bottles in the cupboard intended for drinking. If that is the case, please take no notice my comment :)

thank you for your kind words. open at the moment is

edradour 10
balvenie double wood
scapa
pigs nose (5yr blend)

I also have the luxury of a great pub down the road called Bhortpure Inn (if your'e ever near Nantwich seek and ye shall be rewarded), that has a whacking collection, so in many cases I can drink theirs and put mine down :D

I am looking to collect good examples of the closed distilleries. Perhaps I am wrong but is it better to go for the cask strength than the 40% bottlings?
