Victorian whiskies?

Postby Iain » Tue Nov 22, 2005 11:33 am

A whisky-watcher just drew my attention to the latest batch of 6 (!) Victorian whisky bottles made available on e-bay:

What do you make of them?

They are in very good condition, aren't they? I imagine they are especially rare because they have the year on the labels.

I wouldn't touch them with your ten-foot pole.

That's odd - the whiskies seem to have disappeared from the site and only this message remains:

"This seller is not currently offering any items for sale"

Perhaps he got a good offer elsewhere?

I wouldn't touch these with a 10 foot pole and a 50 foot extension.

Seller has been known to sell at least one "questionable" bottle in the past, although the bulk of his bottles (more newly released)seem to be authentic.

If you would like to know more, visit the Malt Maniacs web site and read about the fake and questionable bottles they have come across (many on ebay  ).

Does that mean my bids have been cancelled????

If you had bid on any of the auctions you should have received a cancellation notice from ebay. Unless he decided to end the auction early and sell to the highest bidder at the time he closed the auction. Maybe you will be getting some bottles at bargain basement prices

In the case you were being facetious, sorry for the ignorance

I was being tongue in cheek. Like most other posters here, I would be suspicious of one immaculate victorian bottle on ebay - but when seventeen come along at once...

I should have guessed right off the bat as I have noticed a tendency of the posters to avoid ebay (and rightfully so).

Somehow this seller gets/has a great number of very rare bottles.

Willing to bet that most of them are acquired from Italy.

The seller is going to be receiving a letter from the Scotch Whisky Association and I don't think he's going to be happy. Much going on behind the scenes, keep and eye on http://www.maltmadness.com for further news.....

Eye of newt,
Spleen of ewe,
May all your drams
Contain Loch Dhu.

You can credit me in the footnotes
Or just curse me back!
