Littlemill closed in 1994. Since then several more distilleries were closed (or rather mothballed): Scapa, Tamnavulin, Tullibardine, Imperial, Glen Keith, Glencadam, and, very recently, Allt-a-Bhainne, Benriach, Braeval and Caperdonich.

Hope this helps (and I didn't leave one out)!

Why are the best (well some of the best and some less good ones) at first?

*tilt* Scapa closed. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who's next? Highland Park? The Talisker distillery? Bowmore? Where will this end? Do we all drink Jonny Walker at the end? Or Glen Fiddish (the supermarket edition)?

Jenny, don't worry. It's my understanding that distilleries generally get mothballed due to overproduction or lack of demand. They will reopen when the stocks get too low/demand rises! Obviously some may have gone through finance problems, but that's another story!
