Buying whisky casks

Postby Jonas » Wed Jul 02, 2003 7:30 am

Me and a couple of friends have been discussing the idea of buying our own whisky barrell. I know at least Bruichladdich sells barrells, but are there any other distilleries around who also do it?

I also would like to know if it is possible to only bottle part of the barrell at at time, i.e. so that you could get a 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 y.o from the same barrell. I mean, who would want to have 200 bottles of 12-year old?

Springbank has a similar offer but I believe due to heavy demand they've suspended if for now. Try Arran, they might still be doing it. The Shetalnd distillery is offer cases for US$850. The whole point of buying a cask is to get a large quantity of a certain whisky however if you go in with a large group then the outturn is more manageable.
