OK, Iain!

As to that early 'no peaty' Laphroaig mentioned in the Fake Macallan thread: how do they know it's 'not peaty'? Stated on the label? Sneek sample drawn from the bottle? Based on distillery records?

Lex, there is a pic of the bottle on the website. It says "Non Peaty" on the label.

'Non peaty' - very 1980s/1990s wouldn't you say ?

When was 'peaty' first used as an industry descriptor ?

Could Alfred Barnard tell us ?

And a non-peaty Islay from 100 years ago - was there a peat shortage ?

OK, I hadn't seen the picture of the Laphroaig bottle, so that explains my query.

Barnard does talk about 'peat reek flavour' in his description of Laphroaig.

Nevertheless a curious bottling for sure.
