info wanted about old Bell's whisky

Postby pavv » Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:55 pm

Hello

I recently purchased a bottle of whisky from eBay.

It's my first blended whisky as I normally only drink single malts.

Out of curiousity I want to try some old blended whisky because I heard from several sources that those are a lot better tasting than the current bottlings.

I was hoping that someone here might know something more about the following bottle of Scotch:

looks 1960's to 1970's to me, 43% means mainland europe stength. tax strip will tell you which country...

The bottle is from Italy(look at the tax stamp).
From what I can see from the photo it should be one from the 60's.
If I'm not wrong Bell's should contain a good amount of Blair Athol.

Now...Open it and let us know how it tastes :)

Bummer! I will have to go to the supermarket to get some other stuff for cleaning windows with because this bottle doesn't do the trick!

After a long trip through Europe the Bottle of Bell's finally arrived at my place this weekend together with some whisky-enthousiasts who came to my house for a nice informal N&T.

The Bell was opened rather soon and compared to some also quite old blends (A 5 year old Cluny from the late seventees and a Crafword from around 1973)

All three were great compared to the modern blends... Way more maltwhisky involved in making this stuff than nowadays and a much better interplay between malt and (very good) grainwhisky

The Bell needed a little time to get some fresh air into the bottle after holding it's breath for over 35 years. And than it revealed a great nose and an excellent taste. Lots and lots of sherrycasked malts did go into this blend that will beat several malts in any contest.

Great stuff!
