1976 Whisky's

Postby lbacha » Thu Jan 04, 2007 4:01 pm

Hello All

I started this thread to ask for some help. I've been slowly building a collection of whisky over the past year and the one vintage I don't have is 1976 which is the year I was born. It seems to be a hard year to find OB bottlings in and I was wondering if the group here could help me. I'm considering narrowing my collecting of premium bottles to just 1976 vintage to try and set some direction to my collecting.

The key criteria is that they need to be distillery bottlings.

I can get some independent bottlings from 1976 but from a collecting standpoint they don't interest me as much as the OB's do.

Here is the list of bottles I know about:
Lagavulin 30 yrs old
Brora 30 yrs old 2006 release
Various Rare malts (I have the full list on my computer)
Single Cask barrels of Ardbeg

If anyone has some older bottles from 1976 they would be willing to trade or sell I would be intersted. Just knowing the bottle is out there will help me as well because I then know to look for it.

Thanks for any help.

No problem it is still nice to see the IB's because I may be interested in getting one to try. I always find it neat to try whisky that is older than me and anything the same age is an even better treat.

From 1976, in OBs, there are some excellent BenRiachs (but getting more difficult to find), Glenrothes, Macallans, some Balvenie 25 YO single casks, some Glenfiddich Single casks. I am not sure, but there should be also some single casks of Highland Park and very likely some Glenfarclas.

Does anyone know if the new talisker 30 yr old is a 1976 vintage or is 30 yrs just the youngest whisky in the vatting of barrels. I know the Lagavulin 30 states 1976 vintage on the bottle.

Not an OB, but I loved the Clynelish 1976 from the Murray McDavid Mission series - some folks on here merely liked it, but it has recently become my fave Highland dram.

Just a couple of posts back, did I say Ardbeg?

I'm sure I really meant Macallan 18y 1976.
My keyboard just doesn't keep track of my brain sometimes!

Also not an OB (since there is no '76 PE OB) that you still might be able to find in the US, a Port Ellen 22yo '76 Scott's Selection.
I've been though a bottle of this and have 1 stashed for later, it's an excellent dram!

A note about collecting OB's only in the States is that we don't get OB's from many distilleries. With the likes of Ben Nevis, Glen Grant and a cast of many others you will most likely have to order internationally to apease your '76 OB collection.

Cheers!

I originally got mine at the Wine & Liquor Depot in Van Nuys, Ca. The last time I saw one (on-line at least) which wasn't long ago, was at Beltramo's. Most likely you'll find here and there in those liquor shops that has no internet page.
