I half suspect this one to be genuine - after all, what trickster would do this? The open bottle is almost worthless, whilst the whisky is easily tastable. But on the other hand, it could be a double bluff - it's so obviously not a fake that who would call it?

An odd fate, nevertheless, for bottle number one of Laphroaig's most prestigious bottling of all time. You'd think it would be at the distillery in a glass case.

well certainly the bottle was out in the 'wild' so to speak, I remember the guy who originally bought it was an Oddbins employee in Edinburgh, although as to its complete provenance, I don't know.

Who would 'accidentally' open one though - to be fair there were occasions when I was tempted...

Must've been a few on tasting that night!

But what a fool to actually try to sell an open bottle. Once it is open, it is just whisky for drinking. No investment potential at all. If you have accidentally opened it, you might as well get on and drink the rest - make the most of a bad situation.

And once it's open for a while, even that is questionable.

However I am sure there is a market for an open bottle. An enterprising con-person could easily top it up, use a replacement / forged foil cap, and away you go. You may have to spirit away from the all seeing eyes of the WL forum though!

Rufus - you could top it up and sell it as new, perhaps, if it had a less distinctive serial number. But bottle number 1 does stick in the memory. Perhaps it could be changed to a 7?

I've seen some silly things on ebay but this takes first prize.
