I prefer the 17 but it is twice the price so not nearly such good value and the 12 is great too.

Still not exactly sure how many closed bottles I have but as near as I can tell if I was to open and drink a bottle every week from now on then I would run out of whisky some time in 2020.

Right. Willie this requires you to stop purchasing as well. :P

Me, I currently have around 70 bottles sealed. However, this will go down to around 60 in January.

As for OP 12 vs. 17. Give the edge in quality to the 17 by a little. My current bottle is every bit as good as the 17 but it is an outlier. Has this certain something that just makes it pop.

How true. Just think, the cash flow problems would disappear, my Mrs. would be delighted, I'd have loads more space in the house. Shame it's not going to happen. :P

Good notes Nick. I've never noticed a bitterness in the OP 12. I have noticed a few whiskies from days gone by where the caramel tastes "artificial" or sometimes "burnt". Me thinks the e150 was much more liberally applied in the 1980s.

[much later]

Nose: sweet malt, salty, apple skins

Palate: bananas, honeydew, green apples, slight iodine

Finish: long and sweet, apples soaked in sea water and sweet malt. Then out of nowhere is this sweet earthiness way at the tail.

Yeah, great notes, Nick.

I think the slight bitterness on the finish you are detecting can be attributed to several different things, not necessarily excessive use of e150. I find Pulteney to vary slightly from batch to batch (a good barometer of that is the famous 'saltiness' which I sometimes find there and sometimes don't).

With regard to Pulteney 12 vs 17, I love the 12 but am probably the biggest fan of the 17 in the world. I think it's a true highlight of the range, I even prefer it to the 30yo.

As of last count 206 single malts, I haven't counted my bourbons lately they seem to be scattered around in various parts of the house (I ran out of storage cabinet space long ago!).

Cheers!

I'm purchasing less bottles, but they seem to be more high end or hard to find whiskies (at least in N.America) these days. Definitely getting pickier with my purchases...

Currently around 60 closed and 40-50 open I think, though I have been unsuccessfully trying to reduce the open bottles down to a couple of dozen over the past year or so...

73 bottles of whisky / whiskey presently, which leaves me a little less than 200 short of Nick...

A noble goal, that.

(Though one I'll likely never consider trying to achieve.)

"sigh"

...y'know Nick, sometimes I just marvel at you and other times I despise your good fortune.
Closed bottles are still around the 66% mark of the collection.

Since I can not predict how long I will live... my belief is that all bottles should be open. except of doubles.
All my bottles are open (over 150). there are more then 50 closed bottles , but they are doubles.
I use Argon gas to make sure there is no oxidation in the open bottles.

Haven't opened my 17YO OP as yet, but have enjoyed the 12YO tremendously (just so bloody drinkable!).

Closed bottles... 77 as of today. I'm concentrating on working on what's already had the cork popped more of late.

Just what was that address again?

Just did a quick count of the inventory...
75 sealed so that means over 100 opened. I thought it was the other way 'round!
Damn! Maybe I'm not behind in my drinking...

Musky, I'm shooting for a balance of 100 sealed and 50 open. Right now it is around 70 sealed and 45 open.

I've got about 41 bottles closed and 21 open. But that will change soon, no doubt about that.

About 12 bottles open and +- 300 closed(not sure, long time I stop to count). The number of unopened is going to rise more as I have no intention to open more thant 12 bottles(it's more than enough as I have also many samples).

Up tio 28 closed bottles now, though 4 of those are Lagavulin 16, so 25 unique closed bottles.

I'm hosting a whisky tasting party next month (On St Georges day, and kicking off with my St Georges Distillery Chapter 9 no less!), and will probably be opening 5 or 6 of these bottles then. All in a good cause though :-)

They are some members of the forum who badly want I come to brussels with a few bottles. Don't have much time for the moment but if you are interested I will send you an e-mail.

Regards
MARS

PS : I don't have many peated single malt and only 2 ardbeg. (and I can't open the bottles of glendronach I don't have twice as I collect them)

I like this God of War fellow! plus or minus 300 closed bottles and willing to hold a tasting. Makes me think I should go there in 2014 instead of Russia for the winter olympics!
