Macallan 12 being discontinued???

Postby Novice Scotch Fan » Sat Jul 14, 2012 1:09 am

I heard a rumour from a fairly authoritative source that Macallan 12 may be discontinued and replaced with a NAS.

Anybody heard anything along these lines?

I swore on one of the last two episodes of Whisky Cast, they interviewed someone at Macallan, who confirmed the suspicions.

Sorry I was just saying that I have heard it from bloggers, so I confirmed that I have heard your rumor before. but not from any authoritative source.

You said - from a fairly authoritative source - that would mean to me someone either in the industry, ties into Macallan, or someone in such a position to know first hand.

If this is true, then please let us know. They maybe the best person to answer additional questions that we may all have. Before the distributors all get wind and jack the prices up on current stocks. I know I would like to get a few bottles if they are no longer making it.

Cheers,

If I recall correctly, they are getting rid of quite a few of the Age statement whiskies, and replacing them with a line of NAS whiskys. He said something along the lines of the theme for the bottles are going to be the specific colors the whisky tends to pick up from a certain type of cask. So they may distinguish a bit between types of sherry casks, or American vs European Oak.

I have seen no label approvals for the US yet... so it is at least a ways off for us. :o

It is going to be phased in around the World. As I do not quite know the time tables for things like this, the North American markets might still have a full year or more of the range we all know and love before it gets changed out. We likely at least have until close to Christmas.

Are they changing the whiskeys much? Is this a totally new product line, or will they just take the age off to make the current products more cost effective (which would have a slight effect on quality)?

whilst having a tasteing at macallan with bob delgano about six years ago
he mentioned that they had to stop doing the 15 year old
so they could supply enough for the 12 year old for the duty free market
as they had been asked to supply more cases of the 12 year old
funny how things change

I'm still leaving this as "we shall see". The same thing was said of Laphroaig 10 about 5 years ago. Turns out they were only phasing it out in certain markets like Canada.

Richard, Macallan only released a couple of vintage 15s in the US (an 84 and 85) that came out aroiund 2000. Was Macallan releasing a 15 for an extended period in Europe.

i see what you meen ganga the tasting was further back than i realised just goes to show how time flies

it was sometime after i complained about the 1946 macallan probaly about a year maybe two years in total

so 1946 macallan at 52 years old is about 1999 plus two years you are a lot closer than me
so circa 2001

The rumours about Johnnie Walker Green started much the same way. At first just rumours, then Diageo started pulling it from certain markets and then one day production ceased.

We are not discontinuing Macallan 12 years old. The new 1824 Series will replace 10, 12 and 15 years old over time in those markets taking this new range. Only certain markets will move to the new range. The majority of brand sales and the range in our largest markets will remain in Sherry and Fine Oak for the foreseeable future.

The 1824 Series, which is 100% matured in sherry casks, does not carry an age statement. This approach enables the Whisky Maker to draw on his broadest range of skills in cask selection, unshackled by the need to draw on casks selected first and foremost for their age.

In The New Yorker, Feb. 11/1i8 2013 ssue article by Kefela Sanneh about Bruichladdich, says ."Last year Macallan announced that all its malt younger than eighteen years old would be sold not by age but according to a four-color system, ranging from ruby to gold."

In the UK, everything under 18yo is being withdrawn. The new Amber replaces the 12yo sherry, the new Sienna is to replace the 15yo Fine Oak and the new Ruby is to be sold alongside the 18yo.

That is sad. I hope that the 12 remains in the US and not replaced by the Amber.

The Mac 12 and a few others have been pulled from the LCBO ( Ontario, Canada) in favor of the NAS line. I'm not a happy camper.

So why is The Whisky Exchange taking £60 for a bottle if it is not in short supply?
Up from £55 a week or two ago.

i noticed there were a lot of 12 year old macallans minitures in edinburgh instead of the 10 year old
dont know if this gives a clue

the main idea of the 12 year old was for duty free market many years ago

I just came from Scotland last week and got some information that might be helpful. When I was in Edinburgh, I went to go check out Macallan 10 as a price point to see how expensive the scotch was since, being a novice, that was the one I was familiar with and wanted to avoid being ripped off. They were selling for 100 pounds. Thinking that they were really jacking up the price, I said something. They told me about the switch-over and that folks were stockpiling. When I told the vendor that I don't think its caught on in the States yet, he told me to grab as many bottles as possible and sit on them. Confirmed this with a few of the shops. Hope this helps. Cheers.
