Chivas Royal Salute 21 years

Postby Jguinness » Mon Mar 25, 2013 12:50 am

I have in my possession a bottle of Chivas Royal Salute. My dad claims it had been sitting in my grandmas house for 20 years and was bought in Brazil before they moved to the U.S.. So on top of the whisky already being aged 21 years, it was bought 20-30 years ago, making it 40+ years old.

How would I be able to confirm its age?

Is the quality of the whisky better?

I doubt it was stored correctly, so how should it be stored from now on?

Afraid not. The maturation of whisky is timed by it's contact with wood. The compounds in oak are what matures whisky. If it was 21 yo the day it went in the bottle then it's 21 yo for ever.

For future storage just stand it upright in a dark place.

The Royal Salute has a cork stopper.
I would store it on its side to stop it drying out.

I would take bredman’s advice, storing whisky on its side is not a good idea prolonged contact of the whisky on the cork makes the cork crumble, and could taint the whisky.

High alcohol content such as that in whisky is bad for the cork. Whisky is not like wine. I took this advice back when I started and it destroyed a cork and the whisky.

I hope the bottle wasn't shaken around much on its journeys. Thank you all.
