Good Scotch with both peated and unpeated expressions?

Postby slobak » Mon Jul 14, 2014 12:58 pm

I'm trying to put together a tasting clinic for new whisky drinkers and wanted to showcase the way that peat influences the flavor of whisky. Ideally, I'd like to find a decent pair of single malt whiskies by the same distillery that differ only in that one is peated and the other is unpeated, so in a side-by-side you can taste the difference.

Of course there are going to be lots of other subtleties involved so no comparison is perfect, but I'd like to control for the big differences, i.e. distillery, age, and barrel type.

The Caol Ila 12 yr unpeated (vs their standard peated) would be great but it seems gone / too expensive at this point.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ardbeg Kildalton

Personally I'm not yet convinced by peated Jura nor peated Glenglassaugh

Tomatin/Co Bocan

Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte/Octomore

In Short Benromach nice and affordable and good while Springbank and Bruichladdich give you hree levels of peating to investigate - Octomore not very affordable though.

I hope this helps.

Bunnahabhain also do a peated expression called Toiteach.

An Cnoc have recently released lightly prayed variants with rumours of a more robust version on the way.

Tobermory/Ledaig are long standing variants from the same stills. Not to everyone's taste though.

Caol Ila do an annual unpeated release which is always good in my opinion.

Arran is the last one I can think of which does both although I don't think they have done any very heavy peat.
