Tasting order

Postby Franziskus » Fri May 09, 2003 11:11 am

Hi,
I've bought this 4 malts:
1) Bowmore 17 YO
2) Ardbeg 17 YO
3) Isle of Jura Superstition
4) Lagavulin 1986 Double Matured

My question is: what is the right tasting order ?
What about some food to meet them ?

Hey there,

That's difficult since they are all peaty and I assume you mean to taste this on one occasion, one after one? I'd suggest

1 Jura
2 Bowmore
3 Lagavulin
4 Ardbeg

1 and 2 are the less peaty and *slightly* lighter in body IMO. The Lagavulin is very very sweet initially but the wonderful characteristics of the standard 16 emerges in the finish. The Ardbeg 17 is not at all as peaty as the 10, so I suppose you can swap the order of the Laga & the Ardbeg.

Whatever works for you is the right way. Experiment, enjoy & have fun. Image

I agree wholeheartedly with Rob, particularly the bit about possibly swapping 3 & 4

Ardbeg 17 is not a huge monster, though Bowmore 17 isn't really either. Still, I might be tempted to do Jura, Arbeg, Bowmore, then Lagavulin.

Hi There ,
i would taste them in the following order -
1)Bowmore 17yo
2)Jura Superstition
3)Lagavulin 86 DE
4)Ardbeg 17yo
mainly due to the B17 being my least favourite , the jura being so-so and the Laga (going off the other DE's i've tasted ) being sweet to my taste .
Cheers
Gordon
