How Much do You Pour?

Postby AragornII » Mon Aug 04, 2008 5:21 am

After reading about a couple of epic tasting sessions on the "what did you drink last night" thread, I was curious. How much does everyone pour for a typical glass of whisky and how many tastes for a good evening?

For me, I will typically have about 4cl x 2 glasses of whatever whisky I'm drinking that evening. Sometimes a smaller pour if I'm trying one for the first time or tasting several, sometimes much larger if I've had a day I want to forget.

It very much depends upon the situation. I'll pour 35 to 60 ml glasses if I'm only having one or two drams. But during marathons it is around 20 ml, sometimes less if I'm splitting a small sample of something with a few people.

The question has arisen before under the guise of how large is a dram. I think it basically came down to most pour between 20 and 40 ml for a dram.

It really depends on how much or how many different things I want to taste in an evening. When my Brother comes up for a dramming session, or if I'm in for the long haul, I'll typically pour 20ml size drams.

If I'm just having one or two for the evening, it's closer to 60ml each.

Pretty consistently about 50ml each pour. The motion of tipping the bottle is all reflex now. The reflex is also an only child and leaves you answered with a question mark.

Duran Duran anyone? anyone?

A wise man once told me, you can always pour an other dram, so why not pour them small. It's just not right to pour it back into the bottle, or to be 'forced' to drink it only because you poured too much already.

I think once I started buying more expensive whisky, I knew what he meant here, and why he was telling me this. It does make sense, and give you a better appreciation for your whisky, IMHO that is.

agree. I used to pour large amounts and only have one, maybe two whiskies a night. now, I pour smaller - maybe 1 oz (~30ml), and have anywhere between 3 and 6.

I think, in general, I end up drinking less (good for the belly and liver) and enjoying it more.

I pour about 2-3cl into glencairn glass. About 2-3 different scotches per night.

The picture of the glencairn reminds me of one variable for me. I generally try to pour to a certain level based on the glass. For instance, I like the level in the glencairn. I don't really like to get more than this level as the surface area begins to diminish.

I noticed, while dramming in such places as the Bow Bar in Edinburgh, that the standard 35ml pour seems to fill the Glencairn glass just to its widest point. That's basically how I measured a dram, when I was using Glencairns. I rarely use them any more, but I think I still pour about that much per drink...maybe sometimes just a wee tad more.

If I am only having a couple then 50ml if I am sampling then I will have 25ml in each. I rarely will exceed 100ml in a total evening. I just take my time with each dram and enjoy it so much theres no time for more than that usually.

2-3 oz

But if it is Lagavulin or Highland Park ...it could go 4 ounces.

Ah yes, those two fingers measures can be pretty good, especially if you are selective about which two fingers you use!

As for me, it depends upon how many whiskies I am tasting.
If it is a pub tasting event, then it will usually comprise six whiskies (sometimes eight) with 2cl of each.

If I am at home pouring for myself, then I rarely try more than 2-3 whiskies at any time and 2-3cl of each is fine.
If I am drinking only one, then I may pour 4-5cl.
