I buy my books via amazon and have always a look at the shelves in the whiskyshops. At Gordon & MacPhails in Elgin, they have a selection of interesting books.
I am not a book collector, but try more to read everything which is published on Whisky.

So far I've only got a few books about whisky. I'd love to hear some suggestions about what I should be reading next. Currently I have on my shelves:

There are some interesting, rare old books that should be in any collection. These include:
Alfred Barnard - The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom. Now £2,500 for an original edition but plenty of reprints. Usually one turns up on eBay every few days! He also did some little promotional pamphlets on various distilleries after this. If you ever see one, saw off your arm to get it.
Jameson et al - Truths About Whisky. Dublin, 1887. Desperately rare. Gorgeous plates.
Aeneas MacDonald - Whisky. Edinburgh, 1930. The first modern book about whisky. 1st edition rare - £150+ but did I mention that Canongate published a facsimile last year for £9.99 (less on Amazon), edited by yours truly?
The original edition of the promotional book about The Glenlivet dates from 1924 and is very nice if you can find one. Lots of reprints on eBay.
Also look out for the 1935 book about North British Distillery (lovely plates); anything by Nettleton (late Victorian technical books on distilling and brewing) and William Birnie's The Distillation of Highland Malt Whisky. In fact, I'm in the market for that if anyone knows of a copy for sale...

And a Hibs supporter into the bargain.

Perhaps you and I are the only two Hibs supporters on the planet with a 1st edition of this book. What are the chances of that?

I don't collect books on whiskey (I went down that road on another obsession of mine and I just don't have any more shelf space). I have perused the holdings of the National Library, my old university library and my local library and if they have a copy I can refer to that's good enough for me.

But I do have some books that I like to have close by for quick reference or because they are jam-packed with good info.

I also tried to buy a copy of Barnard but didn't succeed. It's an important book but its contents are on the internet so I don't feel its lack too badly.

OK, my collection:

• 1000 Years of Irish Whiskey, Malachy Magee
• Industrial Ireland 1750-1930, Colin Rynne (a mammoth work that includes lots of info on defunct distilleries, maltings, etc.)
• Irish Whiskey, A history of distilling in Ireland, E.B. McGuire
• The Lost Distilleries of Ireland, Brian Townsend
• Whisky - Technology, Production and Marketing, Inge Russell
• Whiskey Bible 2008, Jim Murray
• Whiskey, The Definitive World Guide, Michael Jackson

If I buy books on whiskey, there needs to be an Irish angle but I have ended up with a couple on Scotch exclusively:

• Scotch Whisky, Charles Maclean (given to me at a Vinopolis whiskey class)
• The Original Guide to Scotch Whisky, Michael Brander (a gift from someone who knew I had an interest in whiskey and saw it in a bargain heap)
