This year is the 80th anniversary of the Yamazaki distillery, 30th year of the Hakushu distillery and, by happy coincidence, also the 10th anniversary of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Japanese branch.
To celebrate, the SMWS are releasing two bottlings of single cask Japanese malt whiskies – one from each distillery.
SMWS Managing director Richard Gordon is in Japan this autumn hosting a series of tastings, including one at Yamazaki distillery in Kyoto, with special guests from Suntory. The bottlings will be first launched on this autumn’s list of the Japanese SMWS.
Another good reason to be in Japan this autumn is to attend Whisky Live! Tokyo 2003 on Monday 3rd November. At the same popular venue as last year, the Aoyama Diamond Hall, the event celebrates the 5th birthday of Whisky Magazine and four years of Whisky Live! in Japan.
The star-studded list of attendees from the whisky industry includes Frank McHardy of Springbank, Kenny Mackay (Bowmore), Donald Renwick (Lagavulin) and Jim Rutledge (Four Roses), to name a few.
