And number two from the high seas
Benromach Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been unveiled as the headline sponsor of the Albacore Class National and International Championships 2009 which will be held between 18th-24th July 2009. This is the 55th National and the 20th International (formally World) Championships and will be hosted by the Scottish Sailing Institute in conjunction with Largs Sailing Club.
Entries are expected from throughout the UK, USA and Canada as well as a large contingent from Shetland and Scotland in general. UK Association boats and crews will compete to be crowned National Champions, and will be joined by their International colleagues to battle it out for the title of Albacore International Champions. Racing will be over a variety of courses to suit the conditions and trophies will be awarded to recognise the different age groups and crew partnerships which are common within the class. Away from the seriousness of racing a full social program is planned through-out the week, including whisky tastings and highland games, the highlight being a Grand Ceilidh reflecting all that is Scotland in excellent food song and dance.
Benromach will also support the Championships by providing prizes for the top placed boats overall and a goodie bag for each of the participants. A whisky tasting will also be conducted during the event.
The National Albacore Dinghy is great first boat for those learning to sail and for the more advanced sailor. The Albacore is a fast and lively while being relatively easy to learn to sail and race.
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres in Speyside is Benromach Distillery - Scotland’s best kept secret. From a small and almost lost distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.
Commenting on the announcement, David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail, proprietors of Benromach Distillery says, “Sponsorship of the National and International Albacore Championships provides us with a strong opportunity to raise awareness of the Benromach brand within the sailing fraternity. Benromach is a product that will appeal to the type of consumer who is confident, adventurous and seeks to a bit different to the norm. For these reasons there are strong synergies between Benromach and the world of sailing. I have a personal affection for this class of boat having been Scottish Champion many years ago.”
Crawford Reid, President of the International Albacore Association says, “We are proud and delighted that Benromach have agreed to support us in what will be a most prestigious event, this allows us to showcase Scotland and Scottish sailing in particular at its very best.”
