Walking in Doig’s memory

Leading figures from the Scotch whisky industry have launched a campaign to build a memorial to architect Charles Doig.
The campaign was kicked off with a 22 mile sponsored walk from Whyte and Mackay’s Fettercairn distillery with walkers passing the now-silent Auchenblae distillery, one of many designed by Doig.
Fund-raisers want to build a permanent memorial to Doig, a doyen of the Victorian era. Among the possible plans being considered is a replica pagoda.
Event organiser Richard Paterson, master distiller of Whyte and Mackay (pictured far left) said that he had been thinking about doing the project for six or seven years.
“Charles Doig designed 56 of our Scotch whisky distilleries and pagoda roofs, but sadly I feel he has never been given the true recognition he deserves,” he said.
Each walker was asked to provide a signed rare bottle of whisky to form part of a special auction set to take place at McTear’s in Glasgow in April. It is hoped that more than £5,000 will be raised.
