Whisky-loving clubbers are being urged to check that their spirits are being served from sealed bottles after three night clubs received record fines totalling more than £70,000 for selling under strength spirits.
Tiger Tiger in Portsmouth, owned by Urbium, was fined more than £50,000 and Ikon and Diva, owned by Luminar Leisure, were fined more than £20,000 including costs for a series of offences.
They blamed staff ignorance and said that the problems had been caused by spirit evaporation from open bottles rather than through a deliberate attempt by the venues to ‘water down’ the whiskies.
But an industry spokesman said customers should be wary of bottles that are nearly empty and which use a pouring dispense. He described the offence as ‘a customer rip-off.’
