Talisker coming of age

Postby Sally Toms » Wed Oct 20, 2004 11:17 am

For the first time ever, Talisker has released 18 year old bottling.
Time has rounded but not tamed the power of the 10 year old, mild mannered and sweet to begin with, then more assertive, warming and smoky. Talisker's distinctive chili 'catch' is still subtly present in the finish.

The new 18 year old has a reputation to live up to – the 10 year old has won six IWSC trophies for best single malt under 12 years old.

And it does... the 18 is a wonderful dram, and when you get it around $50-$60USD it is a great buy.

Cheers,

The Talisker 18y is excellent whisky, definitely "of age" in my book!

The 18yr is delicious.

But I also love the 175th Anniv.; Distillers Edition; and the 10yr. old (the 175th is my favorite!).

I like all the Taliskers I have tasted-- I think they are a great Distiller!

Edit: I notice that it is saying the BBCode is off. I wonder if that is why we get dodgy posts sometimes.

Talisker, a yummy product. My favorite thus far: 20 yo, 62%. Now how can I get my greedy little hands on the 57?

Talisker 10 didn't impress me, Laphroaigh 10 did. This was two years ago.
Nevertheless I'll bought a Talisker 18 and will buy a 10 again to make sure what all the fuss is about...
Recently tasted a little Ardbeg 10 (talking about peated malts), I found the nose very smokey but soft and steady, from beginning to the end.

I have to empty a few first before I open the 18...

That's the 1981/2002 isn't it? I bought a bottle of that after a long, hard look at it on TWE for £125, then took a long, hard look at my wallet, then months and many long, hard looks later I thought 'bugger it' and bought it. And I'm really glad I did; it's ridiculously good, and now priced at £199 on TWE. Sort of similar to the DE (any vintage), but stepped up enormously and very intense :D

As we had a Talisker tasting this week i guess here is a good place to post comments.

We started with 'Island Malt' 1987 12yo 40% bottled by the beerwinespirit chain Oddbins. I tried one of these when they first came out (1999) and found it much to my liking. A few years ago I found some for sale at Royal Mile Oddbins for around £20 so picked up this and the 14yo. Tickets to the tasting were £23/20 depending on 'status' and as the 30yo ate up the budget I was looking for cheaper examples. Opening the 14yo left me wanting so I tried the 12yo and found it the better but thought its character not strong enough to leave a thoroughly contented feeling albeit a fine dram to kick of with. Maybe Talsiker's 45.8% is advisable so as not to compromise the malt's integrity. Opinion of the gathering, 24 of us, was generally not bad but wouldn't buy it...next.

Friends of the Classic Malts 12yo 45.8% £45 (I think - although an offer extended to those having already purchased a bottle saw this drop to a significantly lower price) 21500 bottles (over generous?) More promise on the nose with a degree more delivery of a nice delicate body and a bit more guts but still left us thinking - where's the Talisker we're looking for?

18yo 45.%. These tastings are always blind although some will know what the 5 drams are going to be but not the order. Consensus was this was more like it but disbelief when the identity revealed. A recent purchase which poorly performed against earlier bottlings. No way could this be Whisky Magazine's dram of the year. not bad just not great. Very serious issue of mass production/consistency values. Oh dear things were not going as we had hoped.

30yo 50.7% 2007 £185ish. Few were unhappy with this but the age (and price) surprised a few. Having tried the 2006 effort previously I have a memory the earlier bottling being a tad more, well more. Although memory is
an unreliable record.

Finally Gordon & MacPhail Secret Stills !.2 04/86 - 05/07 45% 3 first fill sherry butts 1860 bottles £75ish. For me perhaps just pips the 30yo but two different styles are hard to compare in a head to head. The sherry/peat smoke mix works for me and others do struggle to see these bed fellows as harmonious, I generally agree with the difficulty in marrying these two potentiallly powerful styles but seem to have had quite a bit of luck of late. Generally well received although 5 drams and some pimts of IPA does not make for total recall. There wasn't a lynching.

Next tasting 3/4/8 5 21yos + mystery dram (25yo+) can be sent through post

Even at $99CDN (Thank You LCBO - retailer of the year, don't get me started). A great whisky that I very much enjoyed - very spicy - a perfect compliment to a Bolivar Gold Medal or any full bodied cigar.

With its amber colour, rich and fruity nose and some behind, this whisky sticks closely to its maritime character tics. The overall effect is a complex warming malt.[/quote]

Ahhh this brings back fond memories .... bought a bottle in November while en-route to my Honeymoon destination.

Still have some left but the highlight was sitting on our veranda with a glass of Tali 18 watching the sun go down in South Africa.

Th e 18 yo is quite good, but no where near the 20yo and 25yo expressions, in my opinion. I'd rather buy a bottle less, and spend the extra on a 25yo.

I'd like to try the 2002 20 YO sherry bottling but TWE have it priced at £235 not and the 2003 at £79.99 the latter is Ok but not £235 that I'm afraid is stretching my budget too far.

Hi all,

Learning a lot on this forum, have tried Talisker and enjoyed it a lot - but not the Talisker 18; something to look forward to!

What is the Talisker 57?

I'm a big fan of Lagavulin 16 myself :-)

Where in the blazes did that big ad for Nokia etc. come from? Weird.

Cheers
