Whisky and Cigar Challenge - Havana, Cuba

Eight Scotch whiskies will battle it out in the finals of the Whisky and Cigar Challenge in Havana, Cuba, on Thursday February 24 after they beat scores of other malts and blends in the regional heats in London.

Retailers, journalists and connoisseurs took part in the London event, which was held at the recently-opened Cuban cigar emporium La Floridita in Wardour Street, Soho.

Judges were asked to taste each whisky with an unidentified Cuban cigar and to score the pairing on flavour and compatibility. In Cuba the eight whiskies selected will be whittled down to just two. These will be tasted by about 300 Cuban cigar festival cigar goers alongside two classic Cuban cigars.

The eight whiskies selected from Scotland were:

* Aberlour A’Bunnadh
* Bowmore Darkest
* Hanky Bannister
* Whyte & Mackay 21 Year Old
* Old Pulteney 12 Year Old
* Auchentoshan Three Wood
* The Glenlivet 18 Years
* Glenrothes 1973

Can somebody tell me a bit more on the 'outcome'..tasting notes..which exact cigars..just basic stuff.

I do regular cigar/whisky tastings and would like to know a bit more on this subject, more or less to enhance my own knowledge.

I can tell you the two cigars were Bolivar Inmensas and Cohiba Siglo V. More information and some tasting notes will be published in issue 47 – if you can wait that long!

The winning combination was Auchentoshan Three Wood and Bolivar Inmensas.

The runner up was Glenrothes 1973 and the same cigar. See issue 47 for more info.
