As we went to press all was in place to begin production at Islay’s newest distillery.
Kilchoman was waiting for the customs officers’ green light after a final visit to the distillery was due in September.
Although the big day for distillation has been put back, the owners are bullish about the new business.
The new visitor centre with its tasteful shop and outstanding coffee is up and running and attracted a good number of tourists over the summer. And already there is talk of expansion, with plans to step up output from 35,000 litres of pure alcohol a year to 80,000 litres earlier than forecast.
Rumours of water supply problems – Islay faced one of its driest summers this year– are said to be unfounded.
