Independent Bottlers Challenge 2006

What are the best independent bottlings? Our tasters tried more than 175 of them to find out.

It’s only in its second year, but the Independent Bottlers’Challenge is becoming a key event in the whisky calendar.

Why? Because the independent sector makes the whisky world go round. It offers the whisky enthusiast the opportunity to regularly stray from a favourite bottle and taste something from the same distillery.

But it can be a hit and miss affair, too, because bad casks find their way to the shelves as well as good ones. So how do you find out what to trust and what to avoid?

Were all the bottlers asked to participate

In reviewing the names of the different companies I thought it somewhat odd that the list was so limited. One might think that this was an exclusive offering only made to a few bottlers. How about a list of all the bottlers asked to participate. As a consumer I always wonder how objective these things really are?

Hi,

All Independent Bottlers we know about were asked to enter and supply their samples. These are the ones who entered :

Adelphi
Berry Bross & Rudd
Celtic Whisky Co
Compass Box
Dewar Rattray
Douglas Laing
Duncan Taylor
Forbes Ross & Co
Gordon & MacPhail
Hart Brothers
Ian Macleod
James MacArthur
John Milroy Selection
Milroy's of Soho
Signatory
SMWS
The Vintage Malt Whisky Company
Wemyss Vintage Malts
WM Cadenhead

Bottles were sent out with only the category (ie. Highlands 13-18 years old) and ABV on the label. Scores were added up and the winners announced.

Bigup to Milroys, surely one of the smallest amongst these indie-bottlers, for doing so well!

It is reassuring to see that time-honoured tradition of paying attention to slections and quality have not been forgotten at Milroys, despite of changes in ownership on occasion. Perhaps some constant still exists in this world of change.

Slainte!

Hi,

what is a independent bottler? Is it only a bottler with own stocks or also a bottler who bought casks from other IB?
AfaIk some of the IB you mentioned bought also casks from other IB.
Did no one from the scandinavian, italian, french or german IB answer on your request? (I don't know Celtic Whisky Co. and Wemyss)

Simply an independant bottler is a business that sources casks from any source of various distilleries and bottles them under their own brand / name. Sometimes they state the distillery other times not.
