Mr Fjeld, I don't know where you get your prices, but in Norway a bottle of JW Black Babel goes for 379 NOK (or £33.16).

Or maybe are you referring to the price of one litre?

Btw. the price in the Norwegian Duty-Free shops is 275 NOK (per liter, equals 192,50 NOK for a bottle (0,7)). In prober money this is £16.84

Nok 379,- is the correct amount yes, but unfortunately something went terribly wrong with the currency calculator....
Thank you for correcting me!

The duty free doesn't really apply as it's for travellers only.

Johnnie Walker Black Label retails for about AUS$42 for a 700ml bottle, which I guess compares reasonably well with the CAN$46 for a 750ml bottle mentioned by Lawrence.

Okay, I hope I’ve got it right.
Johnnie Walker Black Label 0,7l is:
    US 27 USD
    AUS 42 AUSD
    GER 25 EUR
    GB 20 GBP
    CDN(west) 42 CDND
    N 379 NOK
Let’s say these amounts will equal 1 JWB (Johnnie Walker Black Price Index). The next step should be to compare different bottlings in terms of the JWB (to get back to the relativity thing).

In my neck of the woods for example that would read roughly as followes (again all 0,7l bottlings):

    JW Black 1,0 JWB
    Lagavulin 16 1,72 JWB
    Bowmore Legend 0,8 JWB
    Ardbeg 10 1,16 JWB
    Macallan FO 12 1,36 JWB
    Glenfarclas 21 2,28 JWB
    Highland Park 18 2,0 JWB

Get out your calculators and report, please!

Australia's contribution:

Bowmore Legend – 1.2 JWB
Ardbeg 10 – 1.67 JWB
Mac FO 12 – 1.8 JWB
Glenfarclas 21 – 3.5 JWB
Highland Park 18 – Not really available here.

I just checked our some recent prices in the Netherlands. I came up with this list from a popular whisky shop:

JW Black 1,0 JWB
Lagavulin 16 1.61 JWB
Bowmore Legend 0.97 JWB
Ardbeg 10 1.50 JWB
Macallan FO 12 1.70 JWB
Glenfarclas 21 2.17 JWB
Highland Park 18 2.17 JWB

That looks pretty similar to kallaskander's list (which is not too unsuprising). The glenfarclas looks quite cheap, but looking at other shops, it might as well be around the 2,40 that kallaskander mentioned on average.

Funny to see that the scandinavian countries have low prices in terms of JWB. I suppose that's because of the high taxation on alcohol.

In India it will have to be a "grey market " index , and depending on who your bootlegger is and what he bootlegger offers.

Bond:

This is interesting and , since Delhi is by far the biggest market here, what's our JWB index?

JWB is listed at the big local packy at $30. Of course, some anal fool has to put this info in a table, so here it is. Widen your window as necessary. I have taken the liberty of rounding to tenths. If others wish to add, or if we want to add more bottles, I'll try to update. Maybe.

Hi Lawrence!
It looks like the Highland Park 18 is relatively expensive in Canada! And it's probably worth every penny - or dollar - in my mind. Actually, I'd go so far as to say it's even better than the Lagavulin 16 and it definately deserves the hype the latter has been blessed with!

It's curious about the HP 18 because right next door in Alberta it's half the price it is here. $66.50 vs $121, it's just silly.

Interesting to me that in BC, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are similarly priced (as they are in Norway). Most everywhere else, Ardbeg is relatively inexpensive and Lagavulin is rather pricey.

I found the table depressing.....it confirmed for me once and for all that Australians pay far too much for whisky! We pretty much had the highest numbers for every malt listed!

Well, first of all, given that you live on the far side of the world, it's not surprising that your prices would be high. But the other thing is that these are comparative numbers. Your 3.5 for Glenfarclas 21 does not necessarily denote a higher price than Sweden's 2.0. In fact, I would theorize that the countries with the smallest variation in prices are those with the highest taxes, and thus the highest pices overall, since the taxman doesn't care whether that litre of pure alcohol is 21-year-old whisky or three-week-old vodka. The quality/age price differential is therefore a smaller percentage of the actual price.

Addendum: Actually, Sweden's price comes to US$90, and yours, $113...too bad! But my point still stands, generally.

I don't think it matters much, Mr T.....what we're talking about here is value for money, and we are all comparing that value against a known base currency - that is, what we'd pay for Johnnie Walker Black.

If I have to pay twice the cost of a JWB for a particular malt, when everybody else is only paying one-and-a-half times the cost of a JWB, then I still feel qualified to be miffed!!

Should we expand our range of labels - not to add to Admiral's depression, of course, just in order to widen our view? Any suggestions?

And are there any more members willing to compare their pricing to the pricing in the rest of the world? Join in!

It might be interesting to include certain basic and widely available bottlings, and then relatively widely available older bottlings from the same distillery. Come to think of it, it might be interesting to work up a 10/18 or 12/18 index for various distilleries--in other words, the base offering for any given distillery is 1.0, and its older sibling would be rated accordingly. We would then have a comparative index for, say, Laphroaig 10 and 15, Highland Park 12 and 18, Talisker 10 and 18, etc. I'll try to get this started when I've caught up on all the other nonsense around here (been away a few days).

I have a spreadsheet tracking several hundred whiskies - comparing the price in BC and then in various stores in neighbouring Alberta. If there is a way to send it along I'd be happy to do so... (perhaps an e-mail to Bernie???)...

'Just to be silly I've cut & pasted the info in below... (and will probably remove it once a better method of displaying it is made available to me...). What it does highlight is the range of price variance between the two provinces (up to 45% less in Alberta is not uncommon).

Cheers, Dave.

Would the webmaster please change Dave's message count to reflect the equivalent of 5 messages in the previous post instead of one? ;)

Helluva post, Dave...very informative!

Thanks Mark - I would have responded to your flattering post sooner... but it's taken this long for my fingers to recover from the previous post... (but truth is - if we went by "word count" vs "posting count" there might be a few who could challenge Lawrence's lead in this posting race!!!)

I'll be digging in to one of those bottles (or a few) tonight - and then setting off for a few weeks of holiday in the sunny Okanagan (yes, the guard cat will be on duty).

I had a PM from Bernie and have sent him the complete Excel version of that list (further updated this morning with Willow Park's pricing. Hopefully he can put it into a more useable table format for this forum.

Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave,
Your spreadsheet not only highlights the range of price variance from province to province, but store to store. It also highlights the selection of whisky that is available to the consumer in Alberta and BC. I think I would be hard pressed to find some of those bottlings in Ontario - for example, the Isle of Jura, Superstition jumped out at me.

Bernie, I am interested to see how you translate Dave's spreadsheet. I hope you use your flair for the psychedelic that is illustrated in your tasting diagram that was posted in another thread! Good show.

Cheers,
Wendy

Hi Wendy - the list started with the selection in BC (cut & pasted from the BC Liquor Stores website)

http://www.bcliquorstores.com/en

- and grew as I added Alberta's offerings...

Actually, I have been very impressed with what Ontario has available; The Summerhill store (Tasting Tower), for example, is very impressive...

The range in prices & selection in Alberta is driven by their having privatized and the application of a flat tax... The unions in BC have often argued that the government distribution actually saves the customers money - however, their examples are all at the low-end of the price spectrum... (cases of Molson Canadian, eh!) - (and blind to the differential on $50 + bottles of Whisky).

Ontario does have it's unique benefits - such as flexibility in handling special orders and the buying power of being the largest single buyer of alcohol in the world... (as pointed out by Lawrence) - after all, we all know that Toronto is the Centre of the Universe  ... and you do have some great pubs (The Feathers, Allens...) that have been able to amass such strong collections/offerings.

Cheers, Dave.
