This dropped in this morning. Sounds like it could be interesting. There has been some good stuff coming out of Balvenie at the moment. As you can see it is a rum finish. The 14 Years Old rum wood that came out a while back score pretty well in the tastings (WM61) and picked up and Editor's Choice medal.
From February travellers will be able to pick up a distinctive new non chill-filtered expression of The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky, exclusively available in travel retail.
Crafted by David Stewart, The Balvenie Malt Master, The Balvenie GoldenCask 14 Year Old was matured first in traditional oak whisky casks before spending a final period of maturation in casks previously containing golden Caribbean rum. It is offered for sale as a non-chill filtered expression, preferred by some malt enthusiasts as it foregoes the final filtration stage.
Commenting on his latest creation, Balvenie Malt Master David Stewart says, “This unusual finishing period in a rum cask has imbued the Balvenie whisky with a fruity sweetness and subtle spice, to create an interesting new Balvenie expression. For the Balvenie drinker this offers something a little bit special that you can only pick up on your travels.”
Retailing for a recommended price of £45 a bottle, at an ABV of 47.5%, The Balvenie GoldenCask 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a permanent addition to The Balvenie whisky range in travel retail and will be available in airports in the UK and worldwide from February 2009.
