Just tried Wild Turkey Bourbon 101

What a pleasant surprise. It' packs a punch for sure! It reminds me of the HP12 I'm a newbie at the tasting notes, it's peppery, smokey, honey and has a clove taste to it. Perhaps others of you who tried this can add to it. For $22 a bottle you can't beat it.

I love the stuff! Unfortunately, it's no longer available where I reside. And the rather limp 80-proof edition that is available doesn't hold a candle to the 101.

I've got a sample of this to try in the Bourbon tasting nest month, really looking forward to it!

i also enjoy the 101 (and currently have a bottle in my cabinet). however, in the same price range i'd prefer buffalo trace, four roses or eagle rare

How does the Buffalo Trace compare to WT101?

BT is much smoother than 101, much less bite. i would also say that 101 has a much stronger peppery flavor to it, BT is a little sweeter. they are very different bourbons, depending on what mood you are in...but i usually reach for a bottle of BT before 101 (just my preferance) - almost always have both in my cabinet.

I love 101! Whiskywoman, if you want a real treat, try Wild Turkey Rare Breed :P

Now you tell me... LOL I just bought a bottle of Buffalo Trace, you are absolutely right similar to WT101 but no punch very smooth.

I could taste some honey, vanilla and oaky I think I prefer the WT over the BT, but I've only had one dram of it so far. I'll try the WT Rare in the future for sure.

glad you enjoyed the BT. you could also try WT Russell Reserve if you like the rare breed. have you thought about (or tried) any rye whiskies yet?

No thoughts on rye's mostly trying whiskies based on taste.

you should try a couple ryes to see if you like the taste, much different than a bourbon, a lot less bite (not to be overly general, but think of rye bread). if you wanted to try, a few good inexpensive ryes are wild turkey rye, wild turkey russell reserve rye, and sazerac

Hi whiskywoman,

Just now saw this thread. I am rediscovering the joys of WT 101 on ice, or with a bit of cold water. In my youth back in the early 80's (18 was legal back then) I liked WT and Coke, but boy was I missing out by never having non-mixed. It's every bit as enjoyable as many SMS...not harsh like Jim Beam or overly corn-sweet like Maker's Mark or Knob Creek. OTH Maker's Mark and esp Knob Creek are fantastic with Coke.
