Ardbeg 17yo or 1977... which to buy?

Postby MacLlyr » Sun Feb 15, 2009 6:06 pm

I am currently debating on a purchase to add a bottle to my collection. The two contenders, as the title suggest, are Ardbeg 17yo and Ardbeg 1977. They are both reasonably priced with the '77 being about $100 dollars more. I am wondering what you guys think about these two expressions of Ardbeg. Which one is more available/or rare? For you collectors, which one do you find to be more collectable or more likely to appreciate in value (I will eventually drink it although it might sit in my collection for a few years)?
Thanks for your input.

The 17 is the tamer and less peaty one and it comes with only 40% Alc.
It once was a standard expression like the Airigh is now. The 17 was around for some years and the batches differ in quality.
If I were you I'd take the 77 as it was not only a limited vintage expression but also it's an epic dram.

If you have the money to spend... take the 1977. You won't regret it.

I have to agree with the other two posters: I personally think the 77 is definitely a superior dram to the 17yo and it's probably more collectible as well. Nice find!!!

Hi,

I already bought both of them... if you can spend money to buy them both, DO IT!!! But as a personnal choice, Ardbeg 1977 is in my top 3 ever tasted.

NO choice here- the 1977 is a classic- no comparison to the 17yo, although both are good. The body and taste are not comparable

I second that. It is a very good whisky indeed. I finished one bottle and have another one in the cabinet. But, it is usually quite expensive these days...
