Laphroaig 21 yo 1987/2009 Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask

Postby conqueso » Fri Apr 10, 2009 8:51 pm

Thinking about buying a bottle of this, wanted to hear people's thoughts. I love Laphroaig, but have never tried an OMC bottling. How are the OMC bottlings of Laphroaig generally? This one is a refill hogshead, don't think it was finished in a special cask, bottled at 50% (like all OMCs, I think). I know there is a certain contingent of people who think the Laphroaig profile changed dramatically after 1987; this one was distilled in November, and I'm not familiar enough with '87 Laphroaigs to tell whether that was before or after the supposed change. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Some general comments.

1. I have mostly loved the independent bottles of Laphroaig that I've had the opportunity to partake.

2. OMC bottlings for the most part have not disappointed.

3. I have had one OMC bottling that was under 50%.

I wouldn't worry too much about whether the profile is before or after the change. Either side of 1987 I have found to be enjoyable. Your decision should be based on whether you like Laphroaig and if the price is acceptable to you.

Should you purchase this one, let us know how it is.

this one sold out within a day at the whiskyexchange I believe
it didn't even reach the shelves of the shops here in Holland
I was lucky enough to get a bottle
I love it! As did most other peopel I know who tried it. For most it was one of the highligths at a recent whiskyfestival.
And it's in my sample list for those who would to try before they buy

Hope you can still find a bottle
