Ardbeg - Corryvreckan Cult or hype

Postby papercrack » Fri Apr 17, 2009 9:21 pm

I see Corryvrecken is starting to increase in value over recent weeks.
Is this due to the new general release due later this year or has it become another Ardbeg cult dram .
I wonder how many of the 5000 are left  .

I really enjoyed mine, although I must say I prefered the Supernova - outstanding dram.

I think that as time passes and with the release later this year people will want it even more (the 1st release) and prices will go higher.

More likely the Ardbeg Cult that doesn't follow the release information from Ardbeg think this is their last shot. Personally, I think it was a rather mundane whisky.

I think it's hype only for those looking to make money off it.

It certainly is a great whisky, and I've heard that opinion from others here that are not as crazy about Ardbeg as myself.

Virtually all of them I reckon. Nothing rare about the Committee Corryvreckan.

I think it's an excellent whisky, one of the best Ardbegs I've tried.

to me, it was probably one of the best recent release from Ardbeg, more punch and complexity than the Renaissance for instance. In addition, it was a one-off (and containing some Bordeaux-matured casks) and out of the 5000 bottles, quite a few have been opened.

I'd agree with that. Wouldn't be mad about the Renaissance, as nice as it was. The Corryvreckan is one of my favourite ever Ardbegs.

This is what I've heard as well. Somewhere around September, but don't quote me on it as I don't have it from any official source.

Yes, it is going to be on general release, which makes high ebay prices look even more stupid.

Not wanting to open the usual can of worms, but general release only makes current Ebay prices look silly to drinkers. Collectors would see the impending general release as a reason to get hold of their limited release bottles to sit alongside the general bottles when they get them.

I have no doubt that Ardbeg puts out some excellent whiskys in fact I know they do. However I don't think the speculators can have as big an impact on a 5000 release of Ardbeg as people think. I personally put it down to the fact of it being a pure cult distillery and the distillery really plays on that and between the distillery and the Ardbeg fans they create the hype amonst themselves.

In relation to this expression collectors and fans are paying over the odds now in the blind knowledge that the next and subquent versions will not be of similar quality.

I personally feel the Ardbeg will slowly become a Bruichladdich with so many different expressions that it will eventually dilute the so called collector status of the Distillery.

Sell now while the going is goood

Well you won't be tasting the same whisky , It won't be like the Supernova which was the same batch of whisky , it will be made up differently.....
