Springbank 18

I was considering ordering a bottle of Springbank 18 but since I haven't really loved any Springbanks yet, I was wondering what you all though of it? I have had the 10, 10 100 proof, and 15 and found them all to be average to slightly above average.

In my opinion the 18 is simply a very good, enjoyable drink. I'm biased though as I do like Springbank...

My notes on the 18, fwiw:

Nose: Lots of sherry. Ground chocolate, toffee and dark treacle. Lightly briny, salty and herby. Maybe a light earthiness. Traces of mint (Kendal mint cake). Quite creamy and buttery. Hints of leather and wet dog? Hints of desiccated coconut.

Palate: Sherry again, but it's more winy than it was on the nose. Some leathery notes and dark chocolate. Brine and salt again, more so than on the nose.

Finish: Quite winy, with a little mint, orange and some treacle coming through after a few seconds. Quite flat.


A really good nose let down, I feel, by a slightly thin palate and short, flat finish, although both of these are still pretty good. Drinkable and very easy-going.

I am not surprised at your assessment. The 15 should have been above average. Had you tasted the 12 yr 100proof, the 21 yr, 25yr or older you would be "enthralled" with the complexity of the malt! If you had the privelege of tasting a 21 yr cask strength or a 35 yr cask strength you
would be on your knees "begging for more"!
The 18 should be quite delightful I am guessing, since it is not available as yet in the US.

I'm a Springbank nut (like this surprises you all). I think there are better Springbanks currently available than the 18. One that comes to mind is a current single cask. I'll look up the notes once I finish unpacking from my trip.

PS. I did get to retry the 12 yr 100 proof US release, informally called the double dark. Absolutely fantastic whisky!

The Springbank 18 seems to be gone in most places, but it's still available at the Celtic Whiskey Shop - http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com

I think I'll pick up a bottle. They also have Hazelburn 12, which seems to be in short supply. I bought a bottle recently and thought it was very good.

Springbank 18 is in the U.S . This bottle is somewhat
disappointing and certainly not worth the asking price.
A lot of the older bottles are priced too high for most.
I would say go with the 15 yr. or the 10 yr. cask strength.
I have around 60 springers in my collection and this one is
far from my favorite..

Have you tried the Hazelburn 12, Jazzlover? I think it's pretty good, but I have heard no rave reviews yet.

It's on my list,however I have some very nice Longrow's.

I agree that the 18 is disappointing at its price, and also prefer the 100 Proof. That said, I feel like the 10 and 15 have improved since the labels went black. Anyone with samples of the 12 yo double dark to trade can pm me. Thank you.

I've the Longrow 18, which I plan to open soon. That's supposed to be very good, as I'm sure you know.
