Talisker 18

With Talisker 18 now not being sold anymore, does anybody know what blend it is going into or why they pulled it?

Unconfirmed.

Surely this must be a joke?

Hi there,

no Mr Fjeld as I said it is unconfirmed. I picked that info up sometime last year when Diageo announced that Talisker and Caol Ila will be available again in Summer 2009.

Summer 2009 is almost over and both malts are not langer available. Afaik.

It's been a couple of years since I've really found those readily available. It is my understanding that Talisker is a component in the JW Red. JW Red back in the 80s supposedly had more Talisker in it - reliable rumor.

That is painful. I must buy a blend to taste one of the better SM's around :yuk: ? I do hope they begin to release it by it's self again. Thanks for the info.

Cheers

As I was intending to expand my whisky experience to Talisker sooner rahter than later I decided to go to the whisky shop nearby ( 25km ) to see what they have after reading the 18 may not be on sale anymore ( or at least for long.)

I bought a bottle of Talisker 10 and they also had a bottle of the 18 8) so I could not resist and picked that up to. I will sample the 10 this evening but I intend to leave the 18 closed until I come across another bottle.

Or maybe I'll open it on some special occassion.

At least for now it seems the 18 is still on sale here in the Netherlands....

I suspect there is just a gap in supply to allow them to reintroduce these malts into the retailers at a much higher price. The distillery has been selling the 18yo at £70 (if I remember correctly) since the Spring.

That makes sense. The amount of single malt sold from the likes of Talisker and Lagavulin in the 80s was a fraction of what it is today. Given that there is a limit to the capacity of the stills, if there is much more malt sold as a single then there is much less of it going into blends.

The Distillery has now run out of the 18 in the shop, can remember what price they were charging though..
They said that 90% of production goes into blends! I thought this was quite high.

I read the same statistic of single malts being used primarily in blends. Part of the reason is that total volume sales of blends is many times more than single malt sales.
