Was just strollin' thru the local L.C. casually checking out prices when I noticed that the Ardbeg 10 which sold for about $60 Canadian was now priced at $92 and change!

The 10YO, until recently, ran in the CDN$61-63 range here in Quebec through the SAQ. And this was a veritable bargain when compared to the hefty close to CDN$100 price listed by the LCBO in Ontario. However, the local listing is now tagged at CDN$77.75, and bottles are currently scarce (only 2, apparently, in the province at this moment). Not sure whether this is a strictly a Canadian phenomenon, a North American one or if it is driven by increased supplier/distributor prices.

Yet another argument for nabbing personal favourites when they're available for reasonable asking prices, as one just never knows what will transpire down the road.

The Ten has been going up about $8-$10US each year in most parts of the US the last 3 or 4 years, now about $65-$75, just under prices for Uigeadail or Lagavulin 16yo. I happened across a store the other day that had it at an old price of $45US and once I confirmed the price was correct in their system I snatched all 5 bottles. The guy even gave me a case discount so I walked out with 5 for $199 or $39.80 each +tax. After I wiped the dust from them I noticed they are all from 2006 and I only had one L6 left.

Other bottles I've noticed that are taking a dramatic turn upwards are Balvenie(15yo SB,17yo LE, 21yo PW), older Glenlivet's(21 & 25), and Glenmorangie(18yo, 25yo). All these at 30%-50% even 100% increases. Newer releases like the Glenmorangie Signet and Glenrothes '75 vintage are even worse. It's like a race to catch up to Macallan where they'll collect dust also.

I'm kind of expecting the industry in general to further open a market for NAS entry-level bottles for most single malts. Age statement bottles are more and more premium priced, even 10-12yo. That $30-40US price point is a hard hurdle to cross for a lot of average consumers. I know I'm weighing the purchases more these days when income is flat, but prices seem to rise exponentially.

At least this time of year brings holiday sales and some nifty gift sets.

It's now $99.95 in Ontario. The pricing at the LCBO includes taxes.
The same bottle, before taxes is $92.81 in Manitoba. Alewishus, scoop it up while you can at $92 and change.

As stated, Ardbeg 10 prices have been escalating in the US. In 2007 I could get it for $39; now it's $56. It will be very interesting to see what happens when the new Ten finally arrives here.

Ardbeg is owned by LVMH, just like Glenmorangie, so I imagine that the steep price hikes are part of the same overall "premiumization" policy, except that with Ardbeg they didn't bother with the fancy new bottles and newfangled names.

My wife picked up the last bottle of Glenfarclas 17 here in Manitoba; it's for x-mas and was a good price.
She says I can pick up a copy of Whiskey and Philosophy, but that's it...kids are next.

I've noticed that higher end whiskies are less expensive in the UK but the lower end are much cheaper in the US.

Check the price of Glenmorangie 25 in the UK and compare it to $800 + in the US. But then I can get the Laphroaig 10 for $28. While there may be anomalies, I think this represents a good measure in the differences between the two markets.

Maybe Rich, but I can tell you it would be significantly cheaper, if these frums are anything to go by, to buy a Laphroaig 30 in the US and shipped here (except that they won't do it).

Nope, Ardbeg is owned by Glenmorangie who in turn is owned by the Louis Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy company. LVMH bought Glenmorangie a few years back with the entire goal of taking the brand much more upmarket, the price increases across the entire Ardbeg line is in keeping with that.

If you can get someone to send it to you then it can be worth it especially as its a 75cl bottle. The last couple of things I had come in from the US both got stopped at customs and they levied duty and the carrier put on an admin charge too. That can make quite a difference but there is still substantial money to be saved on this one.

How did you do that ? You can't bring more than 1,14l of spirit back to Canada without having spent at least 48 hours. Did you pay the taxes (which are about 115% (yes 115% ) when brought back to Canada) or you just didn't declare to the custom agent ?

I manage to spend my vacation to the US partly due to that fact. A visit to a duty free is a blessing. I can bring out 2 1l bottles (my girlfriend don't drink )

with your GF's exemption you can bring back 3 bottles. you are allowed 1.14 liters each and it does not say how many bottles it has to be in. 1.14 x 2 = 2.28. 750 x 3 = 2.25 so you can bring back 3 bottles of 750!

anyway i bought 8 and brought back 3. the other 5 are in my place near seattle waiting to be brought back on later trips.

Crazy eh? I saw a bottle at Lee's in Las Vegas a couple of months ago for $599 and last year they were about $240!

I found the A10 for $49 at a local shop. They said that was the price the distributor gave them. Not sure how long this will last or how wide spread it is in the US.

when we still had the old L8's, I got 10 bottles at 60$ +
tax to put away, guess I saved over 300$. Don't know if I
will purchase at over 90$, it's pretty expensive. I will prob
switch to laphroaig quarter cask once I am through with my
10 bottles.
