Glenlivet Nadurra

I'm sure most have had this but hopefully a lurker or two can benefit:

Glenlivet Nadurra 16yo CS. 56.2% ABV Batch. 0308E


Nose
Muscat, Unripe Bananas, Both Apple and Pineapple

Palate
Gratifying oiliness. Creamy Almond, Cocoa Butter, Faint Ginger Breads.

Finish
Everything is in balance and smooth to the very end. Picking-up some of the fruits from the nose.

Comments
Been really enjoying this bottle and will buy another. I initially had this in a Glencairn glass but switched to a small white wine glass because it helped with the nose this time around. This switch in glassware almost had me forgetting what I was drinking because of its smoothness (not just because of the white wine color). This is an example what what I hoped to encounter when first decided to undertake whisky.

I guess many have had this by now but there are quite a few different batches out there so many of the notes we have seen already are from other batches. In any case, more opinion is better than less.

I was hoping to grab this whisky as a christmas present, nice to read the tasting notes. I haven't had it yet and from what i've been reading it seems to be a somewhat unusual whisky. I can't wait!

I've yet to meet anyone that didn't like it. It is very sweet though so there is a chance that someone might not.

Agreed there are lots of sugar and vanilla notes from the bourbon maturation. Still plenty of Glenlivet pineapple too I always think.

I swear in a blind tasting you could tell me it is bourbon and I would probably believe you. A very interesting dram, in any case.

I wonder how it compares to other mature Glenlivets.

Its not a fair comparison, because there's often sherry wood involved with mature Glenlivet. I doubt you would find the same similarity.

I haven't had an '08 batch yet but earlier batches all had a distinct Spruce tree/spearmint component that was very nice for this time of year and as Glenlivet's go, a big punchy difference in style.

Are you folks tasting it neat, or with a few drops of water?

I find with most of my c.s. whisky I add a few drops of water. They all seem remarkably smooth with the higher ABV (particularly my last batch of A'bunadh at 60.6%).

I can't remember ever putting water in the Nadurra. It just didn't seem to need it. Whatever works for you though. There is no right way.

Edit: I should add that I rarely find that CS whisky needs water. Sometimes it feels closed up and then I try a drop or two but its usually fine for me.

I think any whisky can benefit from a bit of water, regardless of alcoholic strength.

But that is not to say that any whisky "needs" water.

Sometimes, instead of adding a drop of water to a cask strength or high proof whisky (something I often DO NOT do), I simply add another whisky!

Example: Try topping up the Glenlivet Nàdurra with a touch of Caol Ila Cask Strength... You'll be amazed at how the Islay characteristics of the latter accentuate, by highlighting the contrast between the two malts, the sweetness of the former.

One cask strength single malt I do regularly add a minute quantity of water to, however, is The Macallan as, in this case, I find the water tempers the minimal harshness of the spirit perfectly.

I don't LIKE it. I LOVE it!

The 48% version is a great drink too.
