did anyone taste the lagavulin 12 yo natural cask strength? i have 1 bottle but i dont know ..i think it is to strong .dont get me wrong i love the smokiness just think the alcohol is to high .(57.9% alc/vol)peace! posting.php?mode=post&f=12#

I suppose it's the 2009 release? I've had the 2007 (finished it a few weeks ago) and I still love it. If it's too strong you may add a little bit of water. It makes it a lot smoother and richer. It is also one of my favourite whiskies.

I'll simply echo the sentiments of Dubois and johan brugge by saying that the Lagavulin 12 Year Old, for me, is (to quote my tasting notes) "one of life's essentials".



Add water drop by drop (as you see fit) and I'm sure you'll revise your assessment of this wonderful whisky!

As a foot note (and for those of us who still recall the 1980s issues of standard 43%ABV strength 12YO Lagavulin), these recent cask-strength releases of the distillery's make represent something of a throwback to that monster of a malt.

I had the 2002, 2003, and the 2007.

Tried the much admired 2009 at Whisky Live, 4th in a flight of six "Hebriedean"m whiskies on colin dunn's excellent masterclass, and fond it really sweet on the nose, like new make, almost sickly! i'm not particularly fond f new make...

Perhaps influenced by the sample of 3 week old GlenMoray peated I had just sampled.

The Lagavulin 12 2009 is definitely the sweetest Laga 12 I have had (2009, 2008, and 2004). The 2008 is more smoked fish and coal smoke (may fish smoked with coal) while the 2009 is more lemon and diesel (more like a young Caol Ila). Try some water as TTD says and see how that works for you.

I believe I've tried the 04, 07, 09. My preference is for the 09 (I like sherry which this one has in abundance). As a matter of fact, I would say in general I prefer the 12s to the 16.

i've only tried the 07 bottlings and didnt much like that one, but i'm really digging the new 2009 batch.

I finally got my 12yrs old bottle, tasted it, its a wonderful experience. It lets you know how it will evolves into the 16yrs old. Yes it is strong, but it helps you show you the way to better appreciate its older sibling.

I for one (and I'm sure there's a couple more) preferred the original 12yr old 43% to the 16. Todays 12yr old Cask Strength brings back those memories.

I am happy to have had the opportunity to try the Laga 12yo, but unfortunately it is not for me. The Laga 16yo is a classic whisky for me and the 21yo is one of my top 10 bottles I've had the pleasure of owning.
