Red River runs in Glasgow

Postby Rob Allanson » Mon Mar 15, 2010 12:03 pm

The owners of Glasgow's much loved institution MACSORLEY'S BAR on Jamaica Street are back home in Glasgow having just returned from a very special 600 mile road trip to one of Scotland's most westerly and remote locations where they personally took delivery of a highly exclusive cask of spirit - the first people to do so legally in over 160 years!

Mike Grieve and Paul Crawford were personally invited to the Abhainn Dearg
(Red River) Distillery on the north west coast of the Isle of Lewis in the
Outer Hebrides by distillery founder Mark Tayburn as he prepared to release
the first casks of the coveted 'New Spirit' - and their enterprising coup
has now sparked a flurry of excitement and attention from whisky and spirit
buffs across the globe eager to hear of the tastenotes such a rare
procurement will present.

The remote distillery is the first legal operation of its kind on the island
in 160 years and it is through MacSorley's Bar and long standing association
with both whisky and the Outer Hebrides that the first cask of the unique
spirit has been secured for Glasgow - a move that would have delighted
MacSorley's founder Phillip MacSorley who blended and sold his own brand of
whisky, ironically named 'Peacemaker'.  The lively Glasgow city centre
establishment has strong ties with the Scottish islands - during the Second
World War, the owner, manager and kitchen staff all hailed from Skye and the
Uists - and the bar was a popular meeting place for the diaspora of hundreds
of Highland and Islanders fighting in the navy and working on the Clyde
nearby.

MacSorley's Bar will also be the first establishment in the world to sell
the spirit to the general public from Wednesday 17 March onwards, and in
honour of founder Phillip MacSorley's original blend, Mike and Paul will be
naming it the 'Peacemaker' batch.
