Whisky Galore?

This line has popped up at a retailer I frequent. Just curious if anyone has opinions about the the quality of their selection?

I took a chance on the Clynelish bottling and was wonderfully surprised. I've seen a few other tempting items on the shelf at respectable prices. Always nice to get feedback before leaping though.

the Whisky Galore line is from DTC, the people that also bring out the Peerless collection.

I'm lucky their shop is only half an hours drive from me in Huntly.

I've had several bottles from them and all have been equal to if not better than some of OB's from the distilleries themselves.
Two I've had this month are a 14yo Aberlour, very nice, and a 13yo Highland Park. Both around the £23 mark.
The WG Highland Park just beats the OB Highland Park for me, must be because it's not chill filtered, it just gives it that extra something.
Their prices are resonable as well, haven't tried any of the more expensive bottles yet, but will treat myself some day.
Highly recommended if you can get your hands on a bottle.

Hi Mortlach,
I live even closer than that and am in there a fair bit. Agree on the 13yo HP and the Aberlour. I can recommend also their 15yo Ardmore and their Macallan. Also well worth a go is their 15yo blend called Glendarroch (<£20).

Hello Ash.
I'll give the Ardmore a try sometime. I have tried it before, but that was awhile back (in the days they used to give you a dram if you did some work there). I can remember it was pretty good.
I'm hoping the're taking out a cask strenght Mortlach soon. Their 12yo was as good as the F&F 16yo I usually buy.
Has anyone else a good one to recommend :?:

Hi Mortlach,
They do have a 12 Mortlach but I've never tried it. I will likely be in there in the next week, so I might give it a go. They describe it as spicy!! I'll report back.
Where do you get your F&F 16yo? McPhails? or Dufftown shop?
Are you in Dufftown by the way?

I tryed a few of the Whisky Galore bottles and must say that the quality is quite good compared to the price. Good buy.

Indeed Erik (price comparisons). Care or dare to name (if you recall) which bottles you have tried? Right now the local shop has I believe 5 varieties. The other off the top of my head is Rosebank (I think 11 years old). I thought the Clynelish bottle I picked up was exceptional, although nothing in the way of a hint of smoke which I have found in other Leesh bottlings. This Whisky Galore bottling was just a wide open fruit bomb.

I'm enjoying a Aberlour of them ATM and I love it. Price was more then reasonable too (Talkign exclusively about Whisky Galore now, the Peerless collection is a whole different story :wink:

Hi Laphroaig,

I tasted 3 of them and those where The Macallan, Highland Park and Glen Elgin and all of them tasted very very nice, compared to the price I would say a very good deal. The Rosebank you mentioned must have been very good I heard some good stories about this one, so IMO the Clynelish, without some smokiness, sounds pretty good, I mean it's something different for a change then the other Clynelish editions. Dare to explore

Jeroen, can you tell me anything about the WG Aberlour? If you used the OB Aberlour 10 as a reference point how does it differ?

Your question regarding comparison to the Aberlour 10 prompted me to ponder just how varied the Aberlour range tastes. However, I don't wish to hijack this thread, so I've started a new thread on the matter.

No problems on thread jacks (as far as whisky goes). I'd like to hear about all the details too regardless of which brand and how it crosses with this topic. As long as the subject isn't changed to underwater basket weaving or an agenda that detracts from the over all theme - a thread jack of the sort you speak of is healthy and all good as they say.

I think I pretty much heard what I needed to as far as taking a chance on another item. It's almost a win win situation with the current prices of the selection I've seen anyway. Most of what I saw was under $50.00 and of interest. I just wanted to hear that the Clynelish I snagged wasn't a rare aboration in terms of the selective process. One can't be too careful these days, even the most iffy and unreliable independent / private bottlers come up with a gem every now and then.

GLENDARROCH 1988 WG 070 40% 1988 32,60

HIGHLAND PARK 1989 WG 070 40% 1989 32,60

CAOL ILA 13 Y 1990 WG 070 46% 13 1990 36,45

MACALLAN 1989 WG 070 40% 1989 32,60

The prices are in Euro's and Glendarroch can be read as Glendronach. I think you should be OK with the Clynelish you snagged somewhere.
